Well, if you bought a manual transmission jeep, I could see where it would be possible to gut all the electronics and put a carburetor and aftermarket ignition on it. The HVAC could go to all cables. PSC power steering, steam gauges, .... hell, you could turn 30 grand into nothing in short order, IMO, and it would still "work".

But why? Just go buy a perfect CJ that someone spent their life building.
Exactly. One of the reasons I bought a JL was airbags, so in a way, I wanted the complexity. (Although I would much prefer simplicity in the abstract, the problem of bad drivers on our roads is a pressing one).

I was eyeballing a Tj with D60s, long arm, King coilovers, cage, PSC, 37s or 40s, so much stuff I really can't recall. The price was a fraction of what it would cost to do even if you did the work yourself. I was reluctant to give up AC and a hardtop. 😣

Sorry, the JL is the wrong platform, in my opinion. If you want XJ level, go with an XJ, TJ/"LJ", ZJ

The JL depends on many separate computer modules networked together, to achieve basic functions. You would still need many or all of these. If you want airbags, you need that module and the BCM, which you need for the dash, turn signals, etc

If you want a dumb vehicle, start with one. Or, get a JL tub with no electrics and put absolutely everything in it from aftermarket or donor vehicles.
This, don't destroy tech. Buy an old one and add what you want.

Hint, you won't like it.

I have a 73 bronco, built. Overbuilt really. 347, carb, no ac, 450hp 450 ftlb. I prefer the jl 3.6. I'd prefer the 392 but tank is to small

The only thing I would like to get rid of is telemetry. It would break the clock and NAV at a minimum. Disconnecting the antenna is said to not work by itself due to a low power antenna inside the telemetry module.

Not going to lie, I need a "minimum list" of amenities.
1. AC/heat
2. bumping stereo
3. cruise control

As far as I'm concerned everything else is optional. The problem is Jeep can't build me a brand new TJR anymore.

Feasibility of heavily technologically regressing a JL Wrangler
As an engineering exercise, done for its own sake, it'd likely be an interesting endeavor. Certainly, it'd also be a labor-intensive one.

To create a "simpler" JL-generation Jeep, though, one that remains concurrently driveable, enjoyable and capable? Mm... I say it this way: The effort wouldn't be the best use of my time. There's just too much to unplug, with so much of it being interconnected.

Said differently, but using the same context: The person who, for example, lands on this sub-forum during his first visit to the site could be forgiven for thinking he navigated in error to an I.T. troubleshooting page, instead of a Jeep enthusiast forum. The occasional complexity of the thread titles, there and elsewhere on this site, is or should be instructive.

Again, doing it just to prove it can be done would at least be worthy of consideration. Done as an exercise in pragmatic simplification? No. I don't believe a case can be made for that hot take.

Unplug the telematics box and jumper the SXM/GPS antennas together. Costs $8.50.

There's a battery backup in the telematics box so step 4 would be to unplug the battery. But with no GPS antenna and no diagnostics from the Jeep, it can't really do much until the battery runs out.

I just disconnected the Telematics box and installed the cable. Works great!

1. Heat
2. AC
3. Radio
4. Power steering
5. Power brakes
6. Power windows

I have noticed since then that power door locks, cruise control, and heated seats have been added by some.

You might be happier (and wealthier) buying a nice, reliable used Honda and then building up a great side-by-side just for true off road use. My manual JL is pretty damn basic. But even my speedometer is a de facto computer, and pretty much everything runs on a bus. No manufacturer home-runs every last light bulb wire pair like in the ol’ days.

Not gonna lie, on the nights I get off the flight line when the temps are in the single digits, the remote start, heated seats, and heated steering wheel are features I’m not sure I would want to do without. Especially as I get older.

As for the OP’s wish, I think it would be great if Jeep came out with their short cut concept. Would satisfy those who want less.

Going with the theme of ā€œless is betterā€, the heated seats/steering wheel could be wired direct - no computer needed. Two out of three ain’t bad.
