I tested a bunch of them a while back. This one seemed to work the best and no issues with the center console plug:

All of them had their own quirks. This one connected quickly and stayed connected. They release firmware updates to keep improving the UI. The touchscreen "lag" wasn't as noticeable on the 3.0 as it was on the newer 5.0 model. I just couldn't figure out how to get the audio quality on any of them to sound as good as it does on wired CarPlay.
You got a good Wrangler then. None of the CarLinkIts will work in my center console plug unless I use the USBA-USBC adapter which makes it pretty reliable.

This works for me and lets me use the center console port pretty reliably.

I plugged it into the USB port in the console. There is no reason for it to work differently whether it is in the front port, console port or the ones on the back of the console.

You'd think so, but it's been shown by numerous folks that the center console USB port simply does not work very well. I suspect the voltage drop is enough to keep the dongles from working correctly. Without the USB adapter I posted, the CarLinkIt will work for 1-3 minutes then reboot. Over and over. It works fine in the front port though.
