First - thanks to all who answered my question about the winch power cutoff.

now it seems that my + power cable is about 6" to a foot shorter than i want for how i ran the cabling (avoiding any possible chafing spots or undue heat). What is the best way to extend a power cable of that size? I am ok with crimping, soldering, heat shrink if its something like that. Just wondering what some of my options are for a *safe* way of doing it. Because the negative power cable is on the closer side, and the terminal is closer to the winch, that cable i dont have to do anything with.

I routed mine with the provided cable from Warn just fine without any extension. I did wrap the cables with Tesa tape, a lot of it, to ensure there is another layer of protection against heat and chaffing. You can also procure those hard plastic conduits that you can put over the cable. Where it was close to the engine stuff that generates high heat, I have a layer of heat-resistant tape as well that are used for exhaust pipes. Probably overkill but makes me feel better.

I'm surprised the cable that came with it wasn't long enough. I would look to see how other people routed theirs. If not I would just buy a longer cable. They're very affordable.

Extending a cable is creating at least 2 more potential failure points. Keep those to a minimum and buy a longer cable or reconsider your routing if that's feasible.

All the more reason to buy a simple high current switch and a length of additional cable that reaches the battery. With a switch you don’t need to worry so much about chaffing and you don’t need to splice or reroute the wire. (Just like the picture above.)

If you remove a few bolts you can prop the air filter box up and route the winch wiring safely underneath. I added fire resistant wire loom and secured the cables at the front of the battery tray for good measure. You must be choosing a very circuitous path for you wiring for them to be too short. What winch are you installing and how are you routing it? If you are intent on extending it, add a manual cutoff like @Flip showed. I would not splice, since in my opinion, the money saved isn’t worth the risk.
