Somebody here must use OnX on Android with their Jeep. How do you get it to work properly?

I've had nothing but issues with it. I use it on a Pixel 10 pro phone. I've tried the original cable, wireless android auto, and I can't get it to reliably work.

My issue is that usually the android auto screen goes black after I start OnX. Works fine on the phone, but can't get it to display on the head unit. I finally got it to work wireless by some miracle, but next time I opened it the display went to black.

The other issue I have is that it seems like the compass can never figure out which way I'm going. The arrow appears on the screen, but if I stop, it tends to point the wrong direction. This is even after calibrating the phone via take a picture of a streetview and doing that figure 8 that never works.

Hoping somebody could give me a few ideas of how I can get this to actually work.

I've had similar issues and also have a Pixel 10 pro. For the plug in connection, I sometimes have to just unplug and replug back in to get it to work. I used to have issues while moving where the compass thought I was going in the wrong direction, even after moving. I still have the issue when stopped, but I can deal with that one.

That said, call OnX- I found their customer service to be great. When I was having issues with the device while moving, I sent videos and troubleshot with them for a while, and they identified a bug. 2 Weeks later, they issued a new app release and fixed that issue.

Have you tried it on all the different ports?
Yup. Didn't make a difference though. Other apps also worked fine, like google maps and gaia.

I'll try to reach out to their support. I haven't had great experiences with support, but hopefully OnX is different. I'm almost to the point of ditching android because it seems like iOS just works for other people that are using it in my group.

I also run OnX Pixel 10. It used to run great but the last trip it was doing the black screen as you described. In the past reconnecting and/or power cycling (phone and jeep) would fix problems but nothing helped this time. I assume it was some update or something and I'm hoping it just starts working again. My other apps, Including Gaia GPS, work fine.

I'm running a Pixel 7 and I have had this black screen issue, but I run GrapheneOS instead of Android and that always causes me issues with Android Auto. So I just assumed it was related to that with its overly restrictive permissions. But I found that if I leave my phone unlocked with OnX up on my phone as well, it usually fixes itself. Usually after I restart the car. Then it appears to work fine through the UConnect Android Auto interface. I've haven't tried it on a trail yet, just playing around with it around town.

I use OnX with an S24+ and it works on the Jeep screen just fine. Have you went into your Android Auto app settings to tell it to allow OnX to run while using Android Auto? That's the biggest check box to tick. Mine has never run black screen but the arrow usually runs wonky. I keep my phone in an upright Bulletpoint mount, not sure how that effects it versus laying flat but nobody mounts their phones flat. I don't pay attention to the arrow but rather the roads and turns being on my right or left. It's been a hot minute since I've used it so the arrow direction could be fixed by now.

Thank you all. I've reached out to customer service at OnX to see if they know anything about this black screen. Haven't heard anything yet...

It seems like it's common to have issues with OnX and Android Auto. I'm just really surprised that these apps (Gaia and OnX) are as large as they are if it's a maybe it'll work, maybe it won't kind of thing. I've always had issues with running them....I even bought an ipad to run iOS to hopefully get a better experience. It seemed like, back then, after about 15 minutes of running the app would just freeze.

It's frustrating because I need things to work and not just be a beta tester. Imagine getting into your jeep in the middle of nowhere and wonder if it'll start or not. THis is where I'm at with these apps, but yet there's nothing better out there.
