I am pretty knew to ham radio. After getting my amateur license from the FCC it constantly surprises me how freely people list their call sign. Something like AB3CDE. All it takes is two clicks to find their real name and address from the FCC call sign database.

I don't know, so I'll ask: is the call sign equivalent to a phone number, and should be managed as such? How do you find folks with whom to chat? My knowledge of ham radio doesn't extend far past knowing that it's called ham radio. :)

The call sign is equivalent to the residential listing in the old Yellow Pages: full name and address. By FCC (and universally adopted rules worldwide) one must state their call sign when transmitting. I can't fantom the reason one may want to include it in their signature in the public forum. You chat with whomever is reachable over radiowaves and is inclined to talk to you. I got into ham thing to have an emergency communication channel while overlanding. The HF range is pretty wide - coast to coast easily. Somebody may call a tow truck for me one day.

All I need is the recipient's CONUS mailing address via a PM.

This is the one that personally bothers me. Not saying I've seen you do this, but I have seen plenty in the marketplace here that would easily fit in a USPS flatrate box, and they won't ship to AK (or HI). It's the same hassle and the same price. Why restrict it to the contiguous US?

Always kills me when I read an ad that says something like In Texas won't ship...or In California must pick up...I live in a small state ie Montana where it is over 700 miles across and both Texas and cali are bigger......are people scared to list a town or zip code? just wondering lol......I know some are paranoid about listing their license plates....

When I need to get rid of stuff I put it out by the alley behind my house and within a day or two it's gone. I don't know who picks it up homeless people, scrappers I don't know it just disappears if it has any value at all.

Because fuck you that's why.

Seriously though day-to-day nobody thinks about Alaska or Hawaii unless it's for a vacation.

That's funny because I can never find my own call sign for whatever reason the database just refuses to spit out the answer I can log in and see all my information but the database is completely useless as far as I can tell

Ok…deep breaths…probably ignorance. 🤓 I didn’t know flat rate applied to outside the Continental US. So today I learned something new. Thanks.

I see personalized plates in CA with Ham call signs on them from time to time. 🤷

Oh I'm not fuming here, but this thread is basically a rant thread, no?

Side note: Alaska is CONtinental US but not CONtiguous US. It is very much part of the North American continent. Don't worry about that one; half our vendors don't get that right.

I didn’t take it as you were fuming just my normal smartassery. We’ll see, now I’ve been schooled at least twice today. I knew I should have paid more attention in geography class. Rant away.

David...David...we're here for you.

I tend to land on "CONUS" (i.e., contiguous) because in my experience, buyers prefer or require Ground shipping. That's due to the service having a reliable record of dynamic tracking # updates and, perhaps more importantly, consistently meeting delivery date projections. There's no flat rate shipping there, though. I therefore tend to exclude AK and HI so as to avoid sticker shock transit costs.

I'll sincerely keep your mention of USPS Flat Rate boxes in mind.

Would you like a toke now? :)

When I look up what the definition of Continental US I get about a 50/50 split in whether Alaska is included or not. You'd think it would be, but even federal DoD sites explicitly state otherwise. E.g. https://samm.dsca.mil/glossary/continental-united-states-conus
U.S. territory, including the adjacent territorial waters, located within the North American continent between Canada and Mexico. Does not include Hawaii or Alaska.
Alaska is excluded, but Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are in.

Yep. They have a different per diem request/rate for CONUS vs OCONUS. Same as GSA and other acronym agencies. They do that to keep it simple (and because no one knows “contiguous”).
