The center of your tread will move out 45mm - -12mm = 57mm. Aka 2 1/4”

Edit: center of tread will move out Stock offset - new offset. And that is regardless of wheel width and/or tire width

I’ll take that one step step further. Your tires will stick out 2 1/4” farther assuming same tire size but with your new wheels. Now if your new tires are 1” wider then divide that by 2 and add it to 2 1/4”. You get 2 3/4” further out than stock.

Right now it is a stock Rubicon, tires are pretty much flush with the fenders, so I may looking at 2 1/2/3 inches of tire sticking out of the fender?

Yup. Backspace isn’t that useful for figuring out how far a tire will stick out because it is directly related to the wheel width. Offset comparison doesn’t have limitation because it is related to the center of the wheel. For example, a wheel that is 7.5” wide and a wheel that is 10” wide with the SAME offset won’t move your tire at all. (Your sidewall would buldge out more though but your top tread won’t have moved)

Is 2 1/2 to 2/3/4 to wide? Anyone have any pics of that. I ordered the exact same set up and was hoping It was a good choice judging from looking at some I see on the street. Never got to see a Jeep with that look.

Do you mean is the stance too wide? That is subjective. It is more than needed. Also remember that it will be different on a non rubicon beacause of the longer axles. You may have to consider your local laws too.

I'm assuming you're using 45mm because this is the offset for the Rubicon wheels? Would you happen to know that the standard sahara wheels offset is?

Sahara and Rubicon offset is the same, just diameter is different. My new rims are 17"x9 with -12mm offset. Here is what the 34" ridge grapplers look like on mine. Check out this thread, lots of pictures from a few different people that have gone this route. There are a few other threads as well and a few with 37", they seem to look good as well.

Also, a really good site to check out is https://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp they have a great app that graphically shows the differences.

I know this an old thread, but I have the same question. Today I have a stock JLU Rubicon (stock wheels and tires). I have purchased a set of 37 in BFG KO2's (37 x 12.5 x 17) and a set of Rockstar wheels that have an offset of -12 and backspace of 4.53.

I am generally not a dense person, but I am still confused buy the backspace/offset issue. My question is dead nuts simple, will my tires stick out beyond the fenders?

My estimate is your new tire/wheel setup will stick out over 2.8” from the stock tire location.

-12 offset on a 9” wheel is the same thing as 4.5” back spacing if you want to open up your search terms.

4.5” will put the tires slightly outside the flares for a nice aggressive. The vast majority of aftermarket wheels in the JK/JL bolt pattern of 5 on 5 are 4.5” and 4.75”.

For those that are offset/backspace challenged this tool does all the work and presents the answer in a visual format that is easier for most people to understand. Just plug in the numbers on the current tires/wheels and the new ones.

Kevin has a video of 38s with -12 backspacing on 17 x 9s. Go to the 7:30 mark for a walk around view. (Kevin, hope you don't mind.)
