Well technically speaking the DOT doesn't even classify an SUV as a separate class. Therefore a Jeep would either be a "Passenger Car", or "Truck". A passenger car (class 2) is a 4 wheel, single unit vehicle. A truck (class 3) is also 4 wheel, single unit vehicle. However, the key is that per FHWA a "passenger car" is a sedan, coupe, or station wagon. Since a Jeep is neither of those 3 things, it is by classification, a truck. Boring DOT link
Likewise SUV's used to be called trucks, and registration plates were "truck" plates, because they're not a sedan, coupe or wagon either.

So now that I've taken all the fun out of the conversation, back to the general talk.

We've always referred to the Wrangler as a "Jeep Jeep". Meaning, yes there are other models of Jeep, but the Wrangler is a "Jeep". If someone says they have a Jeep, people assume Wrangler. So if you have a "Jeep", you have a Jeep Jeep, aka Wrangler. Otherwise you have Grand Cheorkee, Renegade, Compass or some other SUV. The Wrangler is in a class of it's own.... a Jeep.

Oh, I just had a thought about this. Does anyone remember these:

Jeep Wrangler JL What is it? ebay857673

That's a 80's model Suzuki sidekick.

Jeep Wrangler JL What is it? ?u=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.pinthiscars.com%2Fimages%2Fsuzuki-samurai-truck-for-sale-wallpaper-7

And there's a early 90's Sidekick. Both of these are from before they became more SUV looking.

Non-Jeep owners would often times refer to these as a Jeep too. Even if they knew it was a Suzuki. Which would imply that the particular design/configuration of the Wrangler (and Sidekick) is classified as a Jeep, not a SUV, truck or car.

Keep in mind that Any SUV was called a Jeep back then. I've seen people refer to Explorers and Broncos as Jeeps back when I was a kid.

That's back from the days when Sidekicks and Wranglers used to be in rap videos.

We used to refer to old Broncos as "the Jeep Bronco or the OJ Bronco".
"Jeep" means doors come off

You have to remember that "car" is short for "carrier", and the original Jeep was specifically designed to be a personnel carrier for the war effort.

Therefore, a Jeep is technically a car.

Having said that, in today's world semantics have changed so now we all think of cars as little two wheel drive coupes and sedans only.
Funny, my TJ title listed it as a Carry All. lol.

Out in my rural area you either have a car or a truck. The Jeep serves a purpose far more like a truck than a car, so it's a truck. I refer to it specifically more as a Jeep, but it's still a truck.

When you see a Wrangler do say, "ooh look at that cool truck/car!!

No, you dont..neither does anybody else.

They say, "hey look at that cool Jeep!!"

The new Gladiator is a truck....a Jeep is a Jeep!

It's like nothing else on the road, in a class of its self.

It's a JEEP

Jeep.

This is so ingrained in me that I’ve never successfully named one of my Jeeps and have given up trying. People have asked me “what’s her name?” And I always answer “Jeep.”
