So in an effort to lose weight on my fat pig of a camping set up, I removed my muffler to weigh it. Not surprisingly it came in at 27 lbs. The noise level is surprisingly not bad with no muffler. I would consider running the stock muffler when not making long road trips to camp and wheel and running a muffler delete when going long distance to save weight. It looks like you could fit a resonator or small muffler in front of the axle and maybe find a happy medium. Can anyone explain the difference between a resonator and a muffler. Does a resonator quiet it down at all? Thanks

Iirc, the factory resonator is designed to quiet down noises that could enter the cabin, while the muffler is more for lowering final exhaust noises. Similar I guess, but not really sure how that works.

You could always buy a small high-tuck mini muffler like the ones from aFe (LINK) or Injen (LINK) that should be somewhere in the middle of no muffler and large OEM muffler, while still saving a little weight. The new MagnaFlow high-tuck Overland muffler (LINK) should be even quieter, but probably a bit heavier with it's added Helmholtz resonator tube attached.

Think I'd go with one of those tested small muffler solutions versus guessing which type of resonator could be custom fit and whether or not it would even effect volume output to the same degree.

This is thinking outside the box, but the mufflers that came on my Challenger (6spd) are hardly larger than the pipe. There is a resonator at the rear of the car, but I would think two of those mufflers in series would be lighter and just as quiet.

This is kind of the direction I was leaning. A 4” by 10 or 12” long in line muffler. You’re just guessing high quiet it would be though. I can’t imagine a straight thru muffler would have much effect. But maybe if it quieted it down just a hair it would be tolerable.

Flowmaster makes a couple different cat back systems with just a small resonator towards the front. No more giant muffler in the rear. You’d get a lot more traction on this if you move it to the engine/exhaust sub-forum.

Thanks. I did move it but I couldn’t figure out how to delete this one.
