I went test driving JL’s this weekend. My TJ has been moth balled for the last 8 years.

The manual JL (V6) Rubicon felt so gutless that I decided to wait for the diesel. Then I drove an 8 speed and it felt normal. The second dealer confirmed this and said the 8-speed is a different animal. Wonder if the 6spd is detuned for mileage?

I REALLY want to wait for the diesel but the JL is everything I’ve ever wanted. We’ll see how long I can last!!

Do you guys think we will be able to chip it and do some deletes to get decent horsepower? Usually diesels are very mod friendly and you can get an extra 100HP with nothing more than a chip.
I too drove the new JL Rubi with the 3.6 and 8 speed auto trans and have to admit after owning a 08' 3.8 6 speed auto JK that the the new JL is awesome. Still saving up the funds to buy cash instead of financing but considering how nice the ride is the only thing swaying me from possibly not waiting for diesel is the unknown and the fact that you can buy a lifetime warranty on the 3.6.

Guys, guys, please... I am trying to wait for the diesel. Have not driven the JL, but I had a Ram 1500 with 8spd and that tranny was awesome. And at times driving 65mph, I would get 25 mpg hwy. I have a 2017 JK Rubi and every time I go by a dealership, I start salivating, like Pavlov dogs. My brother owns a 2013 JK in Puerto Rico, and after all hurricanes and junk, that thing is a tank.
I am trying to convince myself that it's worth the wait. And last Saturday, went to dealer in Orlando and the mgr told me around Dec time frame for ED (not that ED)...LOL. I got the money and financing and the whole nine yards, including the wife's approval. So please don't make it hard on this Jeep fan.
Think about the combo of the 3.0, 8spd Lockers, 33inch tires upgradeable to whatever, convertible, fuel economy, torque. OMG, go anywhere, do anything JLURD...Yes, Yes,Yes...

I was trying to wait for the diesel but just can’t wait anymore. Lol.

So we’re getting a loaded v6 and then see if we want the diesel when it comes out.

I don't want to drive the gas V-6. I know I'm buying it if I test drive it. And then , so many colors and options. So help me wait cause the temptation is strong...

Any recent news on the diesel release? Seems like it has been awfully quiet for awhile now...

I went to Airport CDJR in Orlando. The manager and I spoke, he stated that order are beginning around Aug 7 of this year. I am hoping for it to be true, for I want my Rubicon diesel ASAP. This wait sucks, especially when you see all these people with their new JL's all over.

August isn't THAT far away. I figure I have waited this long, what's a couple more months. Also gives Jeep a little more time to work through some of the issues I have been reading about.

My dealer in Fort Collins called me last week and said I could order one after I told him I’d be waiting for the ED. Apparently he called his FCA rep. He claimed that it’d be +$1200-$1500 over the gas. He also said the dealership ordered some Sahara ED’s that will arrive in 4 weeks but no rubicon’s yet.

I’m obviously very suspicious of his claim. Maybe he was thinking he’d get my deposit and just order one when they become available?

Has anyone else talked directly to the dealership?

2018 Jeep JL Rubicon & 2004 Jeep TJ. Previously owned 1993 Cherokee, 1980 CJ5, & M151A2 while in the Military. For the love of Jeeps !
I am new to this forum. I am here because I want to buy a new JL. I currently own a TJ and I love it. I used to live in Europe; Germany and Italy and when I lived there I owned a Jeep CJ-5. Funny thing is all the jeeps that I saw in Europe had Mitsubishi DEISEL engines in them. The locals all found it very odd that I had a gasoline engine in my jeep. With all this desire for a diesel engine....why hasn't anyone sourced some Diesel Engines that are used in the European Jeeps. fitting them in our jeeps here should not be a big issue. I like my two door jeep and I am waiting for the new 2 door JL. 4 door jeeps scream Family...Soccor Mom, VAN, Practical....yes practical. Where my two door jeep represents....its just ME ! 2 Door jeep is not meant for anyone other than the Driver and maybe his dog or another passenger......Just like a corvette. NO extra seats needed. Yes I have children...6 boys...but its still DAD's Vette.....or DAD's Jeep. Not theirs...not the family's.
The idea of a Diesel in a jeep is absolutely GREAT. Makes perfect sense...and its difficult to understand why jeep is reluctant to offer it as an option on all their vehicles. I guess it is going to take a great deal of time for the AMERICAN Car Manufacturers to catch up with the Diesel trend. In Europe Diesels have been offered in most vehicle line ups for as long as I can remember. Mercedes, BMW, Volks Wagon, Ford and Jeep have all offered Diesels in Europe as long as I can recall. I simply don't understand why they are reluctant to commit Diesels in the US. So for everyone who thinks this is something New.....well its NOT. They are NOT inventing the Diesel engine in the jeep again.....anymore than they are re-inventing the wheel. Both have a LONG established record of use in Europe. We simply need to convince Jeep to get on with it here in the United States.

Looking at all the facts, I truly believe they should come out around winter this year. Inasmuch as I would love to go to the dealership and pluck a new Rubi out of the flock, I know the diesel is going to be better.
Last weekend I spent Saturday at Daytona Jeep Beach and salivated for hours on end looking at the new JL's and all other JK's and YJ's and TJ's. But I also know that when my Ecodiesel comes out and we take it to Daytona next April, God willing, everybody is going to be asking me questions about my rig. YUMMY...
For those with TJ's, Cummins Re-power has a 2.8 diesel crate engine that can be swapped, even though you can DIY, if you need, some shop can do it. And I believe is plug and play. Harness and wirings and all the doo-hickey's you need.
I am waiting for diesel...

You can’t just plug a European Diesel engine and drop them in. NA EPA standards and regulations are different from Europe, and if you want to take a look at the news over there the Diesel isn’t doing too hot right now due to new regulations. Also, the Diesel here is a third party supplied engine whereas the V6 and V4 are in-house. Just like other parts are currently bottlenecked by FCA not showing JL prior to official release and now have to play catch-up, this could be the case for the Diesel. It’s also a very small segment and while not negligible, not a focus for a new launch.

Cummins diesel is as american as apple pie. They have a repower and is for TJ's 4Runners and such. It is a2.8 inline 4 and has 169 hp and 250 or so ft-lb of torque. They have all the gadgets and wirings, computer for a repower. But it is pricey, around 9k. And then the shop is going to share you for installing it.
That's why I'm waiting for Ecodiesel. Should be out by Christmas. Ho, Ho, Ho...

This is only for CARS. Trucks and SUV's are not applicable. Ford and Chevy are both adding V6 diesels to their 1/2 tons.
GM's is actually an Inline 6 diesel.

...mgr told me around Dec time frame for ED ...QUOTE]
If that's remotely true then I'm waiting. 400 plus torque is so tempting. I can live with DEF and all the other issues. Living in Hurricane country knowing I can fuel up just about anywhere and ignore long lines is priceless. Also means I can actually escape the path versus possibly being limited to a tank full because of the fact others ahead of me already emptied the stations.[/QUOTE]
