Hi all, new here and new to jeeps. I'm in the market for my first jeep and wondering about the time to buy right now. If I waited until the 2026 broncos hit the ford lots around here(Oregon) would that provide a better climate for me to bargain? Just wondering if the competition would encourage better pricing. I was looking at a 2023 rubicon 4door listed in the area at $44k with 5k miles. The dealer would only come down to $43k and with only 2 months left on the warranty. With similar new 2025 rubicons for sale at nearby dealerships for $49k-50k, with a lifetime powertrain warranty on top of the standard warranty, I couldn't understand why they wouldn't come down in price. Help an ignorant noob get a grasp on pricing and if these are reasonable prices or if I can manage to get better. These were all with v6 automatic powertrains.

Walk away from the 2023. That dealer is looking for a sucker. He didn’t come down in price because he isn’t hungry for a sale yet.

That being said, check out @Ratbert ‘s dealer invoice sheet. You can thank him for his research later. :like:

I offered them $40k on the 2023 if they threw in an extended warranty, no-go on that. I am in no hurry. I checked Ratbert's list and I'm trying to wrap my noob brain around it. The brokers had nothing to offer when I put in my zip and no dealers in my state at all on the list. Not sure where I can go from there on the list. Do you think the rubicons for $49-50k will go down in the next month or two?

When I first started looking I was focused on finding a good price close by. I eventually realized that distance wasn't that critical since flights are relatively cheap and a good road trip can be nearly priceless.

And, of course, you can use my spreadsheet as leverage when negotiating with your local dealership.

None... but it pays well.
On finding a great deal... I had done nation wide searches for 3 months on used Wranglers with a specific price range and year made. It really narrowed my available options and at least created a target market area to make plans on a flight and drive home. Key points... stay away from northern states. There are a few cross border Canadian models being sold here in the states. I have seen them being sold from WA all the way into NY/NJ.

North of Sacramento, CA, IL, and most of Texas are big areas you'll find a good deal. I purposefully looked for at least a 97% untouched Wrangler. Make a list of options you want and compare trim levels that make those options part of the package. It is more cost effective finding a higher level Wrangler at a good price than trying to find a Willys or Sahara that meets your needs.

I suggest a 2024 over a 2023, if you can put up with the interior. There are some 2020s that can be a better deal in the long run. Less issues with 2019 and 2020 Wranglers.

Not all rhe best deals are in winter months. I did mine late spring when dealers still had late trade ins to sell.

I have purchased three vehicles from Granger Ford/Jeep in Iowa and I live in Los Angeles, California. 100% worth the flight down there and the drive back.

This is the best advice.

This is exactly what I did. The only reason I ended up local was because my brother had a contact at a local dealer who he knew personally. Once I had pricing details from the resources on this forum, it went smoothly. But whoever handles inquiries for all these dealers in my area should find new jobs. Cold calling and emailing local dealers was useless and honestly I was ready to drive to MD on principle alone because local dealers were so unwilling to work with me.

Here where I live Broncos are flying off the lots at record pace. It has forced Jeep dealers to do ridiculous discounts. I picked up a '25 Rubicon last weekend that was advertised at $13,200 off sticker, plus I got $1,000 Jeep bonus cash on top, plus lifetime powertrain warranty.

I shopped three Ford dealers for Broncos first. None of them could come remotely close to matching Jeep's deals. The Ford dealers were at $4k more money down and still $200 more monthly on BASE model Bronco. I walked out of the Jeep dealer with a well optioned Rubicon no money down and much lower payment.

As bizarre as it seems, you may still want to price out one relatively close to you. Even with the time/cost of the road trip, you could still be saving some serious 💰.
As I understand it, most/many of the dealers on the list are 'big volume' sellers, going for higher quantity, lower profit, sales. And if you order one new, you get it built exactly the way you want it.
Also, your warranty is (should be) accepted at any Jeep dealership. So you won't have to drive 400 miles to see if some random clicking is normal and/or covered by your warranty.

Can you tell I'm a big fan of @Ratbert and his list? :) It worked out very nicely for me!

First, you never now what a dealer is actually willing to do until you’re at the dealership with your checkbook out and they let you walk away (and sometimes not even then). Twenty years ago I tried to buy a Dodge 3500 diesel from Lithia. I asked them to match the Dave Smith Dodge price (back then Dave Smith had extraordinary pricing — on the order of $11,000 below Manroni sticker on a $55000 truck.). I was at the dealership and ready to write the check. The sales manager told me the Dave Smith price was BS and more than $3,000 below dealer cost. I told him I couldn’t fly to Idaho until the following weekend, so my offer stood until then. Four days later my salesman called me and told me to come get my new truck. When I picked the truck up the transaction was cold and unpleasant, and the fuel gauge was in the red, but I got the truck for the price I offered.

Next, you have to emphasize the “out the door price with all conditions specified and ALL taxes and fees included”. The list of creative BS fees has expanded year after year. For example, “doc fees” didn’t exist until about 25 years ago. Prior to that, the nominal cost of a dealership clerk processing the DMV paperwork was part of the dealership overhead, just like their electric bill, janitor costs, vehicle detailing, and 100 other costs. (A $30 per hour clerk can easily process 20 or 25 transactions per day… do the math.) Now almost everybody charges a “doc fee”, and others are adding ”prep fees”, ”delivery fees”, or charges for pre-installed dealer add-ons nobody needs or wants. Some dealers also advertise deals that require financing through the dealership to get the deal they are offering (because they get a large kickback on the finance contract), so paying cash or financing through your own bank will bump the price up $1000 or more. The list of deceptive BS is staggering. (This is part of the reason why dealers like Granger look so fantastic by comparison.)

Finally, Oregon used to have zero sales tax. Now it has a new vehicle sales tax that exceeds 1%, with about half of that called “privilege tax” and half called CAT tax (corporate activity tax is .57%). You can’t avoid the .5% “privilege tax” on a vehicle that is going to be registered, because proof of payment is required to register the vehicle. (If you buy out of state, and the out of state dealer doesn’t collect the Oregon tax, you can pay the required “privilege tax” online through the Oregon Department of Revenue and get a confirming code while waiting at DMV). You CAN avoid the CAT tax (about $350 on a $60K jeep), as there is no provision for collecting that on out-of-state purchases. However, the contortions required to avoid out-of-state sales tax varies by state of purchase. When we bought our 2018 Raptor in Maine no local tax was charged. I wired them the money, they FedExed me the MSO and sales receipt, I went to Oregon DMV for titling paperwork, and then I flew out to Maine with my Oregon registration and plates for the trip home. It couldn’t have been easier. But when we bought our RV in California a few weeks ago the dealership had to pay an employee to drive the RV five hours to Oregon where we met an Oregon notary who documented the fact that the vehicle was actually delivered to Oregon. It was a huge pain in the ass, but well worth it to avoid nearly $25,000 in CA sales tax. (Talk about a beating!)

I’ve bought a couple Jeeps from Roberson Jeep in Salem. They’re not exempt from shenanigans, but they’re much better than many Oregon alternatives.

Thanks all for the input, that's a lot to take in and I'm starting to look through this now. For local, I saw this deal in a color that I was interested in. I am going to offer $50k all-in, thoughts? I texted this evening, a salesman called me right away, and scoffed at the offer but I told him we would talk again tomorrow and I think I can get him there. Aside from that I am going to start going through the dealers in your list Ratbert. Between work and going back to college fulltime a road trip is out of the question until summer.

Rubitrux: I looked at your site and you've got some nice rigs. I noticed the shipping is just over $4k to my location, that's going to make it a challenge for me.

Let me know what you guys think of that local.

EDIT: Oh yeah Alex, the "privilege tax" in Oregon here is slimy. The privilege tax I think is for dealers, but YOU pay that if you buy out of state. If you buy in state is the "vehicle use" tax.

Ok, I went through every dealer on your list Ratbert and sent them a message to those who had anything close in stock to what I was looking for, only a few had something close. Surprisingly, the local dealership I linked to had one of the best deals. We'll see what happens tomorrow when I get flooded with messages.

The best deals through those dealerships are usually only available when you order.
