Nothing is more economically important to an automaker than drivetrain longevity. So no, they are not going to knowingly "sacrifice statistical reductions in engine life for fuel economy". Especially when we're talking about a significant reduction in engine life for what amounts to statistically insignificant increase in efficiency. They aren't going to knowingly risk having engines blowing up at 80k miles just to get a 0.01mpg increase.
You better rethink that. I have to tip toe around this but. I'm good friends with a stellantis engineer.
They want a engine to last 125,000 miles .
They figure the average driver puts on 25,000 a year and has a 5 year note.
He has actually redesigned parts to wear out quicker.

This is not true. Especially that last line - that's hilarious.

I have been using Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w-20, so I will go with Mobil 1 ESP 0w-30. Thanks for you input!
You can get M1 ESP 0w30 at Walmart for about $28 IIRC. Autozone or O'Reilley had it for about $35. Keep in mind that M1 ESP and M1 Extended Performance are not the same oils at all. M1 ESP is a European standards compliant oil for Porsche, Mercedes, etc.

Yeah, I would believe "to manufacture cheaper", but not 'wear out faster' as a goal.

I get it, I really do. But he is a engineer for them. It's either true or he lied to me.
I just can't see that.
And that's the truth !
I would believe he mischaracterized it to you. He may have been told to make a choice to choose a design that had less predicted life, but the reason for it was not specifically to shorten life, but to reduce costs.

I hear you. And you could well be right. But I repeated it as told to me.
But he is the one that said about 25,000 miles per year and 5 year notes .
It added credibility to story in my eyes. But I am not a eye witness to this.
I still believe it ! Lol

Someone said something last night about "shock value" on our forum. Might've been his intention.

I bought a 2009 Ram with the 5.7 Hemi brand new, it made it to 327,000 miles before a valve dopped this past summer. I did oil changes at 5,000 intervals it's entire life using 5W 20. Other than this dropped valve it never went in for any engine related issues. The kicker is it's still under factory warranty and just had a new motor installed as we speak.

Sounds like you got your money out of that warranty.

Wow, did not realize there was a difference. See, that’s why I come here to get advice and info. Thanks so much for letting me know there is a difference between the two.
