Recirculated air button or is my Jeep just humoring me?

When the light is illuminated is that off or on?
I want to close the door 100% to block out smoke and ash. Should the light be on or off?

1. If RECIRC light is ON then the plenum door to the cabin is FULLY open. That is the door in the side of the plenum, not a door that blocks outside air entering the plenum.
2. The plenum door can be partially (20%) open to the cabin without the RECIRC light on.
3. In modern cars, there is no way to block outside air entering the cabin. Even if the fan is off, the cabin is intentionally not air tight. Driving will produce a modest positive pressure into the system and the pressure will be vacated through the one-way air passage in the tailgate.

Light on = Door Open
Light off = Door closed
Light off fan off = Door closed
Light off but Fan on speed changes door opening.

Recirculation can be used when outside conditions such as smoke, odors, dust, or high humidity are present. Recirculation can be used in all modes except for Defrost. Recirculation may be unavailable if conditions exist that could create fogging on the inside of the windshield. The A/C can be deselected manually without disturbing the mode control selection. Continuous use of the Recirculation mode may make the inside air stuffy and window fogging may occur. Extended use of this mode is not recommended.

The manual says when the light is on the door is closed when the light is off the door is open.
Light on = door closed
Light off = door open

Very interesting. When I remove the glove box and visually inspect the action of the door into the cabin, the door is fully open when the Recirc light is on. Fully closed if fan speed is 1-3. Partially open with fan 4-7. The Recirc light is only lit when it is fully open. To my knowledge, there is no conduit door closing off air from the front outside vents, so that the system is all outside or mixed inside/outside, but never only inside. My Jeep is an '18 Sport S. Let me know if your visual inspection is the same. It would be interesting if there are different systems to different Jeeps. Thanks.

I was hoping to have something like what I have on my old Toyota truck. if the recirculation button is off, the outside air comes in through the vents without the fan being on.
with Jeep and I think a lot of other cars too, you have to have the fan on to get the outside air in.
i was hoping not to have to run the fan all the time as well.

Thanks for the responses. I've had close to 20 vehicles since high school. This is the only one that doesn't allow recirculation without interference. Not just weird - annoying. It's like big brother is in the Jeep with me. :-(

i found this thread bad use I’ve been wondering the same thing. It seems like if I have a certain combination of mode and recirculate it will stay on, but I haven’t nailed down the secret formula lol.
