Uconnect 8.4 backup intermittent problem.

Guys and gals,

I recently found that my 8.4 inch screen is slowly delaminating. Although the screen responds perfectly, I’ve been experiencing a few problems back-up camera related.

1- Sometimes, I’ll put the Jeep in reverse and screen does not automatically switches to backup camera. I have to press the rear camera icon on the screen and it turns on. Happens intermittently.

2- Once I’ve pressed the rear camera icon, it will stay on back-up camera while the music is still playing and I have no control on the radio. It remains on backup camera, I can press the X to revert back to screen, I hear the chime, but the screen does not respond. I can’t even turn the radio off until I shut the Jeep off and restart.

anybody has a clue of what this is all about?

Faulty radio. If you still have warranty coverage, take it to a dealer for a replacement. If you are out of warranty, either look for a replacement 8.4" radio or an aftermarket radio to replace the existing.

Yeah, afraid that’d be it.

While lots of owners have problematic wranglers, mine has only had 2 things that went wrong.

1- The rear defrost connections getting loose 6 times before the backglass exploded. fixed it with aftermarket backglass and problem solved

2- That darn radio system was changed once under warranty and there it goes again. Problem is that it ain’t under warranty anymore. Do I smell an aftermarket 12 inch screen ??? ?

This might sound weird, but have you checked your auxiliary battery? Have you seen any other electronic gremlins?

After eighteen months, my Jeep started showing all sorts of unrelated electrical and electronic issues, including the ones you describe above, and many others. They all went away after I replaced both batteries myself.

Once in a blue moon the backup camera still goes black; other times the parking lines disappear. But these things haven’t happened more than two or three times in one and a half years. And I’m okay with that.

Thanks Aldo, I have a permanently installed under hood charger. I charge the batteries when I know I'll be a few days without using the Jeep and my S/S has been working flawlessly ever since. The S/S working well has me thinking that my aux. battery is good.... Or am I wrong thinking that ?

Sorry, I don’t know. I’m no electrician. All I know is that the OE batteries are absolute trash.

My guess is it won’t matter if you keep charging them if the batteries are not holding proper charge.

Modern electronics love a healthy, steady flow of voltage to work.

Yeah, might be wise too start thinking of changing them with superior products.

If you end up changing the whole head unit out take a look at the 10" Stinger. I installed mine days after I took delivery of my 21 JL & have been using it over 2 years now. I think I gave like $1800 & I've seen it now for half that. I have the Alpine so mine is installed not even using the amp that comes with the Height head unit.
