Couldn’t find anyone on this particular subject.

Has anyone attempted buying an 8.4 inch radio for a ram or dodge with Uconnect 5 and installing? Given they can make a conversion cable from Uconnect 4 to 5?

I know ram trucks have the conversion on infontainments website which sparked the question.

I don't know if anyone has tried, but what's the benefit? I'm sure there is a difference between U4 and U5, I'm not sure of what's the advantage.

Benefits would be wireless CarPlay, android based system, and everything that comes with Uconnect 5. Worth it to some and not others.

I mean you may as well just go big to do something like Tesla-style screen.

I thought about doing aftermarket but I don’t really like many options and the options that I do like you lose some of the factory options. I don’t really need anything crazylike being able to watch YouTube or whatever.

Gotcha. I would assume it would work, but I would worry about some of the OEM functions working (Ram versus Jeep) but it would be worth a shot.

As for the "Tesla style" radios tend to be more trouble than they are worth, heck, even the reputable manufacturers can't get it all right all of the time. I won't touch them if a customer brings me one to install.

Agreed! I think it may work, just wanted to see if anyone has looked into actually doing it. And as for the ram vs jeep, I am a little concerned on that side however I should be able to use alfaobd to adjust some stuff with research. There really hasn’t been any good Tesla style radios that I’ve seen honestly so that’s why I haven’t looked into it. Your almost always compromising when installing one.

We've got Uconnect 5 in our JGC.. it's nicer, but not sure it's worth the cost or trouble to go from 4 to 5. Maybe further down the road, but right now, meh.

Before you go and attempt this, I would confirm with someone at Jeep (and I don't have a clue who'd you talk to) that UConnect 5 will communicate properly with the computer on your JL. It may require an updated CANBUS or other computer modules in the vehicle as well.

Someone in another thread has already said the new '24 radio won't work in previous JL models, but I don't know how similar the software is to the unit you're interested in.

You may want to head over to the gladiator forum (https://www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/) and ask Jimmy07, I believe he is the one that has done the swap in Rams.

I actually already did talk to him. He said he isn’t 100 percent it’ll work but he did say he had the cables for the rams for sale if you pm him.

Do you know what thread? Is that because of a software issues or is it because of the redesigned dash?

This is the thread, but I have no idea if it's software vs. dash related. It's obvious you can't simply drop that radio in there since they've redesigned half the dash, but right now nobody knows what changes have been made to the technology beyond UConnect.

Who knows? Maybe it can be dropped in. You can easily can install an RA4 unit into a vehicle originally equipped with the RA3 and they work just fine, but those radios weren't the drastic change these ones are.

Thank you for the link. Yea pretty sure you wont get the new screen in but im working on getting the parts for a 8.4 Uconnect 5 RAM, potentially worth it? Got a good deal on the screen so figured why not.

Just in case anyone in the future wonders. Current state of things below.

I ended up buying a UC5 8.4 radio (68453843AF) and i have made a custom harness to plug in to my JL successfully. The harness and radio work, however when i initially plugged the radio in, it asked for the theft code which is fine, I got the theft code and when i put it in it seems that ive lost most of the features that were on the radio before i put the theft code.

Lost Items after putting theft code in
- Ability to change themes (did work before theft code was put in)
- Dual HVAC and heated steering/seat controls dont show up on the radio any more
- carplay/AA dont show as options anymore
- Backup camera did work before theft code(not in HD), now doesn't show up as a button or when in reverse
- It seems that GPS works as the compass shows the direction but doesn't get GPS signal for time or anything
- cant remember for sure but i think NAV was on there but again locked due to theft code when i saw it
- SiriusXM doesn't show up as an option(not a huge deal but not working)
- Steering wheel controls (volume/media output change/radio tuning/green and red phone button/voice action button)
- offroad performance pages

Working items currently
- Bluetooth
- AM/FM (not HD radio)
- Backup sensors
- HVAC and heated steering/seat controls (physical buttons)
- external temperature display
- compass bearing
- radio physical controls(volume, radio tuning, mute, screen off, etc)
- calling via car mic

The radio looks like its putting out a wifi connection(for AA/carplay projection from phone?) as I can see it but don't know how to get the wifi password to connect.

T/s steps Ive done
- Factory Reset the radio twice

Talking to some others, this is as far as I think we can go without spoofing a bunch of messages from the car to the radio. The “radio” works but you don’t get anything from uc5.

there may be a more “hacky” way of doing it but I couldn’t get it to work.

how’s the install going after few weeks? I’m thinking about doing this upgrade and wanted to see if it’s worth it
