Ah perfect, thank you! That very specifically only refers to the rear cargo power port.
Is that not what you asked about? Your question, "I am not familiar with that practice, how do you do that?"..

in response to my

" What's wrong with the dash 12V accessory plug, the USB ports, the Aux switches, even the cargo area port if you move its fuse from the default "always on" setting to its battery/accessory/only on when the vehicle is on setting? "

was ambiguous. And who cares if either of us is only referring to the rear cargo port when the one in the dash is already switched, making the product's claim (my original point) as it being " The only switched ignition lead available to tap into is located behind the lower dash power port. " suspect?

It doesn't say that it's the only switched ignition lead behind the dash, (perhaps true) it says that the only switched lead is behind the dash.

...Unless somehow the 12V dash port isn't a "direct ignition lead." whatever that means.

The dash locations would require you to hack into their wires (as opposed to the product's simple and safe snap in harness) and the fuse trick only applies to the rear cargo port.
No, they wouldn't.

Tom, there are a plethora of products that provide, at one end, a 12V cigarette male receptacle at one end of a cable, and at the other end, pretty much whatever your heart desires, from spliceable wire, to female cigarette ports (i.e. cigarette plug extension cords,) to USB ports, to, with an inverter, even 120 VAC ports. There's utterly no hacking required. Moreover, you're making no sense. The "fuse trick" as you put it: all that does is make the cargo area plug switchable, which is exactly how the dash plug already comes, like it or not, from the factory.

That's not what it says.
It is. The premise of my OP is the product copy claims it "the only switched ignition lead available to tap." Now unless there's something special about "ignition lead" (is there??), then I've provided at least two other places you can can tap for 12V switched power.

Okay, some people have JLs that don't come equipped with the cargo port. But there's always, again, the dash.

In looking at the product install manual
...and I'm looking at the copy associated with the product.

it's clearly for easily tapping in behind the dash.
No disagreement there. If your looking to tap behind the dash this product's your desired purchase. But if your looking to tap 12V DC switched power, no way need you buy this.

Here's exactly what the product description says:

The only switched ignition lead available to tap into is located behind the lower dash power port. This is the only place that a switched accessory can safely be attached. This is an easy way to add accessories without causing damage to the electrical system. The kit allows you to neatly wire accessories that are switched on and off with the ignition key.
Tom, to beat a dead horse, the 12V plug in the dash, is also a switched 12V power source. In fairness maybe that dash plug it's not an "ignition lead." But the dang thing energizes, providing 12V DC current when the vehicle's start button is moved from the off position, just like this product does. That tells me that the product isn't the only place that a switched accessory can safely be attached.

Look, potato, potahto, the product copy is perhaps true or not--I imagine that all depends upon how you define "ignition lead." It's not a big deal, life goes on. Thousands of people tap their cigarette lighter port to run dash cameras, charge phones, etc. But the claim that the product is needed to provide the only place that a switched accessory (even a 12V one to James' point @Heimkehr) can safely be attached just isn't true.

I have nothing against this product. I think it great for discretely tapping 12V switched power; probably better looking than a bunch of split wires coming off the cigarette lighter plug. I just raised issues with the product's claims to better understand why they were being made, or to take issue with them if false.

Peace out.

I’ve actually thought about why the product of this thread may have once been true to its claims.

it seems that this device is a bit of a universal connector compatible with not only wrangler models prior to the jl or even jk, but other Stellantis vehicles, where it may have been the only switchable 12V power source connector in those varied and earlier models.

Wondering, since you answer all the questions yourself and argue with good people trying to provide their answers, what was the reason for this post in the first place???

I respectfully disagree with people who make absurd claims, and ask ambiguous questions I try to answer politely, all for the purposes of coming to the answer to my question, whose answer I only speculate on (no way am I sure) after being informed by their replies, rather than having asked the question rhetorically, liking many of their replies in the process …

and you have issue with that?

Ok. But some of us sometimes theorize the answers to the questions we pose based on what others have to say.

Actually, having looked at the product's installation manual I think I have the product's promotional copy figured out.

"The only switched ignition lead available to tap into (which BTW is the cigarette lighter plug, and to which this product we are selling connects into) is located behind the lower dash power port. This is the only place that a switched accessory can safely be attached (provided you don't go out and buy MOPAR or after market Aux switches.)
