Originally I posted this accidentally in the general section and a mod moved it to the transmission section and it got buried since it should have been moved here.

I'm having a tough time finding a V6 Rubicon to compare at a dealer. Either they're special orders or they're 2.0s so I'm hoping you guys can help.

Here's the issue. Pretty much from the start I started noticing a transmission stutter whenever I came to a stop. Whenever the transmission is cold, it NEVER does this. However, once at operating temperature, it's reproducible almost 100% of the time. Whenever it gets to at least 6th gear (~35 mph), and you come to a stoplight or brake for a turn, you feel it. Several months ago I brought my Jeep for a steering dampener recall and they gave me a 2020 Rubicon 2.0 and right away I noticed it did not have this issue. When I mentioned this, they supposedly did a transmission program reset but it didn't do squat. So I don't know if it's the program with the V6 or there's an issue with my transmission. I have searched on Chrysler/Dodge forums for vehicles with the same transmission and there's definitely info out there with some saying "it's how it is" and others getting brand new transmissions installed. Some of the complaints on there seem to be with upshift issues but my upshift is buttery smooth, it's the slowing down downshift in the 3-2-1 (or 2-1?) range that stutters. My understanding is the 8 speed is supposed to be smooth on up and downshift but who knows.

So....I'm hoping if those with Rubicon 3.6s (so that everything like axles, gearing, engine is the same) can pay attention on slow down stutter and report back. It's driving me a little crazy because if I'm going down a hill and there's a stoplight at the end and I have to come a quick stop, the 3-2-1 downshift is so aggressive, it feels like I'm slamming on brakes sometimes. My other car is a stick shift and this stutter feels exactly like a manual transmission coming to a stop in high gear, and right before the engine cuts out, there's that familiar stutter.

Are you disabling ESS? I found that turning it off caused a stutter when coming to a stop

My 2020 Rubicon downshifts noticeably when slowing to a stop, however I wouldn’t describe it as a stutter, but a very deliberate gear change. I like it as I don’t need to use the brakes as aggressively.

I regret to hear this, Alpha Delta! When was the most recent time you brought this to your dealers attention? Please send us a private message so we can dig in to your concerns further.

No. I usually leave it on.

Sometimes that’s what it feels like and other times it feels like a stutter. It really depends on how aggressive the slowdown is.

I know exactly what you're talking about. My 2019 JLUR did that - best way to describe it would be the sensation you feel when you trip on something but catch yourself. The 2019 was bought back by FCA, my 2020 doesn't seem to do it that I've noticed. I had the v6 as well and also noticed the 4 cyl didn't do it when I had a 4 cyl loaner while my v6 was in the shop.

My 2020 sport s does it when gradually coming to a stop down shifting from 2-1. Most of the time it’s not noticeable but sometimes it’s every stop. Jeep only has 800 miles on it.

Interesting. Sometimes mine doesn’t do it but it seems to do it most of the time. When you say it doesn’t ā€œseem to do itā€, do you kind of notice it still but not as aggressively? Maybe I’m very sensitive to it, since I’ve only had an old 5 speed transmission and my other cars have been stick shifts.

Can you try this for me? Drive about 35 for a minute and then (safely) come to a stop quicker than normal. That’s how I can reproduce it most of the time.

Interesting. So it sounds like a V6 transmission tune/program might be different than in 2.0s.

I wonder if you're feeling the "harsh" downshift into 1st that the ram guys where complaining about? In the trucks many of them said it felt like something bumped them from behind right before coming to a stop.

AFAIK it's just been brushed off as that's the way it is.

IMHO I think it's in the programming to try for 2nd gear with the thinking "most people" are going to start moving before coming to a dead stop so it then has to slam into 1st right as your stopping.

I've only ever noticed it if stopping in a hurry, normal casual driving I never noticed it in my Jeep or my Ram unless someone at a stop sign moved and I let off a bit to coast up to the line then brake again. But it's never felt like getting rear-ended or anything lol

EDIT: Left off half my thought

yup I read those threads and that’s what the complaints mentioned. Harsh downshift. Sometimes there were complaints about delayed/rough up shifting as well.

Have you found a solution for it? What did the dealer say?

i am still having the same issue even after a new transmission by the dealer

please let me know if you found a solution
