If you just want a hitch and brake lights and don’t need sway control are there any easier and cheaper options?

Any harness that would just feed off the jeeps tail lights?
I was told by my dealer they eventually did that for the Cherokee, and may do so in time for the JL. Right now its about $1000 at the dealer for the trailer wiring. Next time around I will order it on my build.

Yikes you can get the switches, hitch and harness for around $650 total..
@MORTON

Labor intensive. Dependent on one's geographical location, labor can get pricey. In general, labor rate in Florida, for example, is much lower then in NY.

I can see a NY dealer getting a couple of hours labor for this install. $120+- hourly labor rate..... Also, you need a pcm flash which the dealer charges quite a bit for...

Hook, line, and sinker.

Guys, you can go to etrailer.com and buy a hitch and 4-pin wiring for $150 delivered to your house.

The hitch is a 5 minute job and the wiring is a Saturday morning at the most.

As far as batteries they're all the same. As far as alternators, you can buy the 220 or 240 amp alternators from rockauto.com for a little over $200 bucks....but mine is totally fine with the 180 or 220 unit that comes on the Sport...whatever it is.

Don't let dealerships rape you. The more successful FCA is at overcharging for this stuff, the worse it's going to get for us!
If the dealer said “Hitch, Mopar tow plugs, wiring, upgraded alternator and Aux switches for $1100”, Id have jumped on that. That’s more than $1100 parts alone. Not to mention 5 or 6 hours of shop time to install. Of course, that is apparently not what he go.

Ya, the Trailer package for Jeeps is a huge ass ripoff. You don’t need a 7-pin in a JL. .i just adding a hitch and aftermarket harness and that’s it.

Not even remotely close to being in the same ballpark as the actual cost of parts alone. We've outlined this before. The alternator is just a swap out, costs FCA nothing. The hitch is $70. The wiring is $70. The only part that is somewhat expensive is those aux switches that almost nobody uses, and those are only a couple hundred bucks.

You're looking at being able to buy all that stuff for a few hundred bucks yourself, but you'd gladly pay $1,100 to Mopar for it? You are exactly the kind of customer FCA loves.

Think we’re talking past each other. If I wanted to add all the stuff I would have gotten if I’d ordered the tow package, it would be close to a grand in parts. The Aux switches and HD alternator would be $600 or $700 alone. I dont know what the wiring harness is off hand. Whether or not anyone would use the Aux switches or not has nothing to do with this discussion.

Doesn’t matter to me. I installed an eTrailer hitch and Tekonsha brake light system to tow with.
