Started my JLU Sahara this morning. About 5 seconds later it tells me that the Auto Start Stop isn't working. (I know, some of you would consider that a blessing. I'm just concerned that the light coming on isn't reflective of more serious issues.)

What are some of the top reasons this could be? FWIW, we got bad thunderstorms last night. Maybe something has shorted. My dealer won't see me until the 28th!

I saw some videos on how to disable ESS and confirmed that neither hood up switch #2 or the intelligent battery terminal connections were loose.

I'm hoping it's something that dries out.

Thanks.
Mine is doing the same thing. It randomly comes on at different times and then goes off. I am also getting a “service stability control” light too. I’m taking it in this week.

Reshea: would you mind posting what the FCA technicians believe the problem to be post service visit? Thanks.

My ESS went out, and I noticed a loss of power on acceleration. I took it in to have it checked. One of the rocker arm assemblies had failed. I know some people do not like ESS, but if it fails, ya’ gotta find out why.

Found this thread. My ES/S is randomly flagging the common error and then disabling cruise control. It happens when cold...but never resumes without a restart. I do hate the ES/S but do want cruise control. Any similar experiences. Ultimately do we end up in the Jeep Dealer? Service is the worst part of Fiat-Chrysler.

you need to take your jeep to the dealer to have the door harness checked out. It sounds faulty. i also read on this page that there was an issue with the front driver door harness

I did have my ESS light come on without and not work right after a mid afternoon start up. i also noticed the alternator was running at 14.5volts trying to charge the battery. seemed a little high but has been fine since and it is back to running like 13.5 on average. I believe i might have left something on that drained the battery a bit. ever since i ran it for a bit around town its been fine.

I suspect my ESS is related to such a poor connection because the error seems to occur often with a bump or turn. Thanks.

Today I did three things to fix? the ESS.
1) disconnected and reconnected the door harnesses.
2) ran codes with my OBDII and there were none.
3) touched every fuse and relay and pressed firmly.

#3 resulted in click, click, click - in all about 60% of the fuses and relays were NOT fully seated. Some of the relays were clearly not seated and tilted at a small angle. Whilst no expert on auto electronics, I would think that poor/incomplete connections would lose voltage and throw some errors in electronic systems!

Two test drives since this morning - no ESS message or failure.

How can this be that $30-50+/hour workers cannot fully seat fuses on an assembly line for a vehicle that will be driven over harsh roads? C'mon Fiat Chrysler, you're building a Jeep!

Thus the poor Consumer Reports ratings based upon vehicle experiences and build quality.

Update...ESS fail came on again. So I did one more thing until I drag it to the dealer. I put a small adhesive round foot on the bottom of the hood where the two switch plungers land. Thinking that one of those might be loose and trigger the ESS fail. I saw a YouTube regarding the intentional disabling of ESS by removing a switch.

Lots including me have had battery issues that caused ESS issues but since having my main battery replaced it’s all been good.

In the EVIC menu #6 which is the ESS menu it should tell you what is causing ESS to fail.

Mine wouldnt work starting when I took it home. Eventually it got worse, took it to the dealer and they found a short in the wiring harness. Been great since and not have it shut off by the tazer. It works in reverse, so on startup it's off and if I want it on I push it on. I like the feature in reverse SOOooo much better.

The message I get is "Start/Stop Not Ready Battery Charging". I can put it on a battery charger and let it charge until the charger say Full and I still have the message. It does start working occasionally for a day or two then stops and gives the battery charging message again.

One of your batteries or a sensor is probably bad.

That first error...not the second. Mine is behaving better. Please let everyone know what the dealer finds out - I am going to give my dealer a list of things I've checked when I turn my truck in. Otherwise, it might take too much time.

Thanks.
