Maybe a large pry bar between your wheel studs?
In regards to this couldn't I just have someone press the brake while I torque it down?

Will do thanks. Yeah a few people I've shown it to have also said it's weird and said the same thing that the shim was behind the race. But this Dana 30 is old school it seems.
Is it confirmed that the pinion shims go on the Pinon shaft between the bearing and Pinon gear base on a Dana 30 and 35 JL axle? Like the older axles, As opposed to in the housing like on the JL Dana 44?
I’m trying to do the job myself but I’m going to have a hard time pulling and pressing that bearing on and off the pinion for the trial and error shim process.

On my M186 axle, the pinion shims were between the head of the pinion and the inner bearing, yes. My advice is to buy two master kits and make setup races/bearings. For all of them.
