That’s why I built a 2-door “Rocklander”. Camping and crawling with minimal gear. You don’t need to bring everything and the kitchen sink and I could easily live in mine.
The past 4 months includes over 10k miles of overland and offroad trips to Death Valley, British Columbia, Baja Mexico, Oregon Outback and Moab Utah.
I have everything I need in one small nimble package.
I’m not talking negative about big built rigs, but I personally prefer simplicity.

According to my Alexa, "Overlanding or 4-wheel drive touring is self reliant overland travel to remote destinations where the journey is the principal goal."

I'm not usually a fan of using the word in the definition, but I would think here it's assuming dirt roads and trails. If that is the case, I tend to agree. Based on that definition, it allows for any vehicle of any capability level to be the tool, therefore anyone can truly overland. This also means the more built your rig and setup is, the more remote the destinations can be, and the more adventurous the journey can be.

I think the real unspoken complaint here is that a lot of people now have very built overland rigs capable of going to amazing places and tackling crazy terrain to get there.... but many of them never go anywhere they couldn't take a Honda Civic. For shame, people.

I have to agree with his assessment of the ridiculous amount of expensive gear that people think they need before they venture out. One of the most expensive being rooftop tents.

I know it’s in unpopular opinion around here but I just can figure out how people find enough value in the thousands of dollars to buy a rooftop tent and roof rack to hold it. It makes the Jeep much more top heavy when doing anything seriously off camber and requires breaking camp any time you want to take a side trip from the main campsite.

I 100% agree with his advice go with what you have and see what you need for next time. However, I did notice his hundred dollar plus pants and $200 boots neither of which are required for car camping.

I'm often occupied, by many things, often at the same time
you should take what idiots like this say with a grain of salt. His definition and perspective is way too narrow and dim witted.
No I don’t agree but i’m open minded to debates with people I don’t agree with if they have a cogent argument.

Mmm, at least you publicly acknowledge your limitations.
Looks like oxymoronic comments.

Publicly acknowledge my limitations, always.

I was recently looking for a camping chair like I used to see in my youth. Basically, a wooden frame that folds out into a canvas seat, easily stowable, like this:

but was surprised to how overproduced many chairs have become, with cupholder armrests, legs that look more like complicated scaffolding used for buildings, and even have their own carrying bag that you sling over your shoulder like a quiver, all 60-80 lbs of it.

How far from the vehicle is he going that he totes that huge chair like a backpack?

Anyway, my point it that I think these chairs are overproduced.

If I was going to overland, I'd go with a setup like this:

I could probably get away with this IF the misses wasn't with me... but you know how that goes! ;)

My GF and I have camped out of the TJ no problem, but obviously it does get more complicated with 2 of everything..

Thank you. I saw these types of chairs from various brands names in China, some 1-star ratings indicate the frame breaks at its pivot point. Am thinking about it.

My reply was more so to point out the modern style of the chair you mentioned, not so much to recommend that exact one lol. I agree that you should shop around for a good quality one. But they are out there!

Sir, those are ~$20 pants from Costco and a set of boots I got for free from a coworker.
