Well, long overdue, but finally getting around to a thread to gather details for the move to El Paso (Ft Bliss). Move courtesy of the greatest fight force on Earth.

Pointers, especially about vehicle registration and inspection in Texas. Tracking El Paso is a smog county, not worried about the JLU or JT but the TJ does occasionally throw a misfire code (typical for the 2000 plus…)

Looking at OnX there seems to be some trails in the area, but point me in the more specific direction. Anywhere I can hit on a long weekend is a plus. I have been to the area many many times over the past three years.

Move will start with driving the TJ from Indy to El Paso next month. Would love to meet up and talk Jeeps on the 3 day trek.

most of the dirt in TX is privately owned so not a ton off places to go wheeling compared to other states that have a ton of public land. You will be close to Big Bend and there are some trails there and then there is Merus Adventure Park in the Palo Duro Canyon near Amarillo. There may be more near El Paso that I am not aware of.

You are close to New Mexico and I believe there is a lot of state land as well as BLM land that you can get to easily

Yup, right on the Texas/New Mexico boarder. Close enough I considered living in Las Cruces.

I have managed to avoid being stationed at Bliss for the 11 years I have been Air Defense, so penance is due. Plus, if the stars align I will be there for an academy slot.

Honestly, despite the heat and lack of green I am looking forward to it. Love the food, will take a trip to some of the wheeling meccas and most importantly should be able to get the daughter some good care. Indy was great but navigating the civilian healthcare system was terrible.

Welcome to Texas! Like others said not a ton of open land to wheel on there. But a few options were listed. New Mexico definitely has more! And you’re not too far from AZ where there is tons of open land to wheel on. AZ has the most open land to wheel on in the US is what I was told when I moved here.
great food there in El Paso. Both TexMex and New Mexican.
registrarion is pretty easy and cheap.

Agree on not being far from AZ. We live in North Texas and are currently in Albuquerque heading to Sedona.

Be SURE to put together a decent survival package including plenty of water and make darn sure it’s with you EVERY time you leave the pavement. There are some pretty remote places down there. Desert in summer is pretty darn dangerous and doesn’t tolerate those not ready for it. Follow the Scout motto “Be Prepared”. Thank you for your service?

You’re not far from the Robledo Mountains just north of Las Cruces, NM. Just get on 25 north and head to the Trackways Monument. They used to do the Chile Jeep run there which they moved further north near Elephant Butte. Some of the trails are easy and others require serious equipment. Like others have said, bring your water and equipment for self recovery..

Naw. He just said the Marines were moving him — to an army base, it seems.

;)

Semper Fi!

And the people of Texas are great. I hope that state doesn’t change with all the pressures it’s under.

Finally have some downtime as the packers do their thing on the house. TJ made the 1500 mile with nothing more than a fresh coat of oil on the underside. Normal for it. Though after 20 hours of combined highway driving on two days I had to try something different the beginning of day three. Lincoln National forest is beautiful.
