I am really unhappy with the GPS. Unless I am zoomed in to “1 mile”. I don’t see any town names or roads except the major Interstates. If I am using it to destination I see my route but again no city names I am passing or streets or roads either unless all the way zoomed in. It is totally useless this way. Is there any way to download or update the GPS maps to show detail? This “new” system is worse than the one in my 2009 F150 which is actually quite decent.

8.4 or 7.0?

Got an 8.4 and don't mind it, it's pretty solid and reliable, even though it sometimes sends me down the busy streets xD

Did you go through settings and make the adjustments? There are all sorts of options to add names and such.

I'd agree that overall the voice system and navigation in the JL (8.4) is terrible. I use andoid auto Google maps and it is nearly flawless. I don't even try the factory nav anymore because it just blows me away how crappy it is compare to the useablility of Google maps. In FCA defense though, my wife's '19 suburban RST's factory nav system is just as bad or possibly even worse.

Keep in mind, when out in the backcountry, no cell service, no mapping on a phone.

As others have mentioned, there are settings with the stock system that provide greater map detail. Bread crumbs also comes in handy when there is no trail. OP just needs to spend more time playing with the system vs. starting a flame thrower thread and getting folks panties in a bunch.

+1 for the bread crumbs feature. I recently stumbled upon this, very cool and has real practical use.

Wait.. what’s the bread crumbs feature? I have 8.4 and been in the settings a few times thoroughly and never seen such a feature. Is this something new on the 2019/20?

I resent your comment that this is a flame thower thread. I don't think you have actually used your GPS which is why you don't know what I and apparently others are also experiencing.

I have had my Jeep since May and this is the least informative Nav I've ever used in any make and model of car. I know they've sold their souls to Apple with the Apple connect and using that Google Maps is great though my iPhone is great but the stock Nav should be better than this. I am talking about driving I-5 through California in L.A. or S.F. and it does not even say Berkley or Oakland as I pass by. So when the Nav and Route Alternatives don't give me the short cut I want to take from 99 to cross over to 5 (Hwy 46 - a large, known highway) it doesn't show the highway on the Nav unless I am in the 1-mi range. So 20 miles out I'd like to touch the screen so it re-direct the Nav to that point on 46, and I can't see it. So I zoom into 1 mile and can't see it, and then you have to move the Nav map with the touch screen - and the whole time I am driving ... does this sound ridiculous to anyone else considering how safety conscious we are about not using our phones when we are driving...

It shows blank next to the highway and I have checked and unchecked all the boxes to try and get something more to come up. I will post side by side screenshots from the Jeep and the Ford so you can see the difference.

Yea I can't find that either and the Jeep User Manual that comes with the car is also completely useless.

Mine is a 2018 JLR, my 2015 GC also had the feature as well as my 2013 JKUR.

Here's a youtube video but I didn't sit through the whole thing. Claims to show how to use:

Google Maps works fine off line, you can download huge areas of offline maps. I do agree that in the backcountry, Google Maps isn't the best, but neither is the built in nav.

You think this is bad you should try the NAV in the JL. It was/is absolutely worthless. I would rather use paper maps.

I have never experienced an OEM NAV system that was worth it. A simple $100 Garmin has all of them beat.

Sorry i do not have an answers for you, I rarely use it and instead use Android Auto.

Download the maps when you have a connection and that solves that problem.

My '18 JLUR came with the 7.0 since I planned on using CarPlay for nav (usually use Waze since it provides speed limit into even when not routed). However on travels when you can't/didn't download Google maps you're kinda out of luck.

I've tried a number of offline GPS apps and so far my favorite is Gaia GPS. You can easily download maps (that don't expire like Google) for offline usage. Have yet to try it out off-road but impressed so far. No, it won't mirror on the main screen but I'm ok with just having the map on the dash-mounted phone for those rare occasions when I'm out of cell range and forced to use Gaia.

I've often wondered if it'd be worth it to do the 8.4 upgrade but from what I hear I'd do better getting a Magellan or Garmin and putting that on a dash mount for better mapping at a fraction of the cost. Will consider that option should my tiny iPhone 8 screen seem to small to my aging eyes.

Try all trails for off road. If you pay their small fee you can use their maps offline. For regular roads, downloads maps from Google.

If you are really getting out there buy maps of the area you are going from OnX HUNT maps. They're amazing, you can use them on a Garmin GPS or your phone through their app.

It's actually called "Trails" within settings, sorry for the confusion. Once bringing up the main Nav screen select the "Where to?" option. On mine I had to scroll down to the second page to find the "Trails" option. Within there you can record your trip.
