remove the tailgate trim. Where the flaps are stuff wool pads. Sounds pads
Basically covering the flaps. Road noise is gone on mine ! I know the flaps are for pressure venting. But … ehh not much pressure when I drive. Or even when the AC is on. Never even notice a difference also I attached a D shaped weatherstrip on the tailgate vertically at the Edge. Up and down , the length of the tail gate door where it meets the body. It’s much tighter and quiet

Thanks for the reply! I’ll give it a try. I have some leftover carpet that may work the same as the wool pads. I don’t see a way for these to get wet and moldy, unless I’m missing something.

the only way it may get wet in the gate is if Jeep drives through more than 37” of water or a huge splash of water. But then again there are drain holes on the bottom of the gate
The wool pad I used were from an old project car and it was the trunk liner. Some newer cars have them around the spare tire in the trunk areas
Not sure how to call it. But it’s like a thick blanket , moving blanket that’s not synthetic. Gray in color usually with lints and lose threads mixed into it -mineral wools ? Or you can buy sound pads from Amazon and spray glue in the back and stick it or roll it. Stuff it. Whatever it needs

I have a stock Rubicon JLU and the tailgate has started rattling when I drive over bumps. It's driving me crazy. Anyone else have this problem?

I had someone sit in the back to try to pinpoint the noise while I was driving and all we could tell is the noise is coming from the latch area (driver's side). I thought it may have been the hard top, or the seat belt or something plastic but no. It sounds like it's coming from inside the tailgate.

It started after I washed/detailed the Jeep. I didn't take anything apart or adjust anything, just wiped the area down with Armorall wipes. That said, I did install a Mopar tailgate table about a month ago but It feels really solid and doesn't budge at all or make any noise whatsoever. Super solid.

I think i'm going to take into the dealership in a few weeks when I'm back from a work trip. @JeepCares
If you're sure the table is nice and snug, then it's likely the latch catch.
You can adjust it and just try a few times to get it to your liking.
Dealership will cost a lot for something pretty simple.

That said...it's probably the table. maybe a screw came slightly loose in the last month.

It's your current biggest change in the area where the noise is coming from.

I installed a plastic-covered sheet of polyfill fiber over the vents like AC77 suggested in Post 31 and the rattle is now gone! The vents no longer function, but I can live without them. Thanks AC77 for the suggestion!

tailgate buffering noise from the hinges the flapping noise is gone. How to fix it? Open the side panel on the right side where the tailgate hinges are mounted. There are small two windows which were flapping, crazily and making noise

I believe this is exactly what I hear. I removed the rear panels from the tailgate and when driving down the road, I hear the continuous flapping of the vents. Its LOUD without the panels on and sounds exactly like what I hear.

1. If I crack the window, the pressure changes and the annoying noise stops. The flaps remain closed unless I turn vehicle and pressure chances or I hit some sizable bumps.

2. With the windows up, and the AC off, there is still some positive pressure but not enough to hold the vents open continuously so this increases the flapping sounds.

3. If I run the AC wide open, the vents stay open and the sound is gone.

Its SOOOOOO annoying and I may try to re-engineer a solution that's not as noisy.
Remove side plastic panel on right side where tail gate hinges are there are two plastic flaps which are glued they might have forgot to put the glue back on to stick them with body that's why they are making noise flapping while you turn on the fan or it's gone once you roll down windown it's not the tail gate vent noise check post 38 thanks

Thanks! I will check that out this weekend. Are there any tricks or advise you can give for removing the plastic panel?

I Armor All'd the plastics and any rubber seals near the tailgate last night and when I was going to work I heard creaking from the tailgate. I thought the tires were gonna fall off. I even checked the backup camera to see if there was shaking. Nope. Afte looking around I noticed this tape was pushed aside probably from the Armor All. After moving the tape back to the bottom..voila! The noise was gone. I have leftover clearvinyl protection sheet that I will use if this one goes. I'll drive around after dinner to see if this problem is solved.

I realize this entry is a couple years old, but I was experiencing a similar clunking sound in the tailgate latch area of my new-to-me 2022 JLUR. In my initial troubleshooting I noticed that the 'tape' at the bottom the latch receptacle was pushed aside. When I saw this post I was skeptical that such a simple thing could cause such a loud clunking sound. Lo and behold, I adjusted the tape and the clunking is gone. Thanks for posting your findings Maui808... saved me a lot of time!
