Happy Easter Folks.

Just went to 35" BFG's on my Rubicon.
They say the Rubicon is designed to run 35" tires.

Question is
"Is the Tire Carrier also designed to carry the 35" tire"

If not what is an economical alternative or what is the bare minimum you can get away with so not to destroying your tailgate.

I think the factory rating is 85lbs for the tailgate. Some people put a 35 on the carrier, others install some kind reinforcement especially going off-road. It's also a good idea to make sure the 35" will clear your bumper. I've read both Teraflex & Rugged Ridge make good carriers to name a few. Keep in mind some of the beefy carriers come with new hinges.

Here's and older thread if you want to check it out.

Thanks for that.
Just put my wheel on a scale. 89.2lb
Im going to assume the Mopar has a safety factory built in so I should be good to go.

Cheers and Happy Easter.

The factory option 285/70 Falken MT is ~ 62 lbs. that would be a 93 lb combo with my stock wheels. My combo with a 35/12.50 Toyo is 90 lbs….. no reinforcement required. :like:

I didn't realize 35's were that light.

I went to 35’s a while back and installed a Smittybilt relocator to compensate for size difference. It utilizes factory camera mount wheel extension. Then I added a RC reinforcement plate that bolts to hinges and gate.

I recently went to 37’s so took it all off and went to the Smittybilt HD system which is super duty and takes place of factory hinges. Little pricey but heavy duty. If you stay with 35’s do the RC reinforcement plate with a relocator but if you have any plan to go to 37’s then just do the HD system and be done with it. By once, cry once!

Here is a pic of the RC plate and Smittybilt relocator I removed and am getting rid of in case you are curious as to what it looks like.

If you’re mostly driving on the street, you’ll be fine for a while; but a reinforcement of some kind would be better. Here’s my recent experience:

I just replaced 35s with 37s.

The 35 KM3/AEV Pintler on the factory carrier was not very impressive. Whenever I would close the tailgate, it would flex and bounce a lot! This was probably going to cause long term damage for me out on the trails.

The 37 Ridge Grappler/KMC Riot is mounted to a Teraflex gate reinforcement/carrier. That thing is solid!! What a massive improvement. No movement at all!

There are lots of solutions. Some more affordable than others. The Teraflex is expensive; but the fit & finish is amazing - top shelf.

One of the issues with bigger tires and carriers is your tire ends up hanging all by its lonesome out on the end of the carrier and no longer touches the bump stops. So there is nothing to stop the tire from flexing when you hit bumps.

Most of the aftermarket options (including the Mopar HD kit) have longer or adjustable bump stops. I've also seen people use pool noodles to provide some extra cushion.

If money isn't a factor, the EVO tire carrier is very nice. It sits very flush to the door so you don't have as much twisting and people regularly carry 40s on it.

I've got the Mopar HD setup and am running 37s. Apart from having to adjust the tail light, everything fits and my backup sensors don't complain.....
