Is this a bad idea? I’m sure the moment you need a spare you would wish you had one but how many of you have been a scenario where a spare on the spot was 100% necessary. An exterior tailgate able makes way more sense to throw light stuff or stuff you wouldn’t want to put inside the jeep (dirty boots, blankets, recovery gear?)

When you're in the desert 100 off-road miles from the nearest gas station, damn straight you want a spare. I wouldn't go anywhere serious like that. There's no roadside assistance off-road. I can't imagine a worse vehicle to not have a spare than a Jeep. Put a box on the roof if you need it.

Yes, I have been in a situation where self-recovery and a spare on the spot was 100% necessary. Early 20th Century miners are well known for randomly tossing sharp scrap metal everywhere. Getting a tire slashed by a 100 year old ghost is not all that unusual.

good point but I hate the desert and would never find myself that far off the grid. But 100% a spare was necessary in your case

I stick to ohv parks and well travelled forest trails where I could probably get some help if a patch kit didn’t do the trick.

I just saw a Jeep on Saturday that had a rack with a cooler mounted to it on the rear door in place of the spare. I didn't get close enough to get a good look at the setup but I could definitely the see the utility of it if you do a lot of camping/fishing/etc. and were comfortable with the no spare option.

I've had to use the spare on other "daily driver" vehicles too many times to seriously considering driving without one. (Potholes, nails, "wtf did that?" leaks and damages.)
I'd also be concerned about something random to get beatup when off-roading since I'd think a low-air spare could handle more. But, I'm not speaking about that from personal experience, and it would depend on the type of off-roading you do.

something to consider... if flats are a big concern, Maxxis (Treps or Creepy's) are the answer. They have 1" side walls and are the tire of the hammers.. I have never had a flat on them (20 years) and i have run them at 0 PSI on lite - moderate loads (<4k lbs) over distance. They do blurp pressure out of the side wall at <10psi.. in serious rock crawler scenarios.. thus double bead locks are required if that is your use case..

Saying all this.. i do not carry a spare 90% of the time...

hope that helps..
