Earlier tonight I turned on my Jeep and the tachometer was reading 2k with my foot pressed in on the clutch. The engine did not read below 2k no matter what I did. I turned it on and off a bunch of times. I’d watch the rpm needle do it’s initial check. It would start at 2k and go all the way past the 7k tic on the gauge. I couldn’t find any info online about this issue. Called Jeep and they said they haven’t heard of this issue yet. I decided to take off my negative terminal and let it sit for a minute. I put the terminal back on and it’s working normally now. Just thought I’d share this for anyone out there who might run into this issue. I’m hoping it doesn’t come back again. Appointment set up with the dealer tomorrow to have them double check everything!

Had a similar problem. Mine was only 600-700 off but the speedometer was off sometimes too. I was able to get the dealer to replace my cluster due to the tachometer.

I have a similar issue.. I have a video of it. I have taken my jeep in for a few items, and have been able to show the Service tech the problem for them to verify. BUT the repair Tech could not reproduce later on, so nothing was fixed. I have a video of the tach being off, but it doesn't do it all the time.. so I am sure it will not happen when the service tech looks at it... so ..

I am in the same boat unfortunately. Mine fixes itself if you just let it sit for a few hours but it’s syill annoying if I’m making short trips all day.

I know this is an older thread but I am having the same problem. It is an intermittent problem and the symptoms are starting to happen more frequently but are inconsistent in their presentation. When it first happened, the tachometer was reading 3300 while idling, and 2500 when the engine was off. At that time, the gauge just seemed to be reading 2500 rpm higher than it should read at all speeds and in all gears. I turned engine off and on a few times and checked the fuses (as recommended on other threads) and nothing worked. After it sat for a few hours, it reset itself and worked for a couple of days. Three days later, it did the same thing again while driving into my driveway. I parked it in my driveway and went inside to call the local Jeep dealer and they said to video tape the problem and drop by the shop while it was doing it. I asked if they could at least make a note that I reported the problem during the warranty period (to preserve a potential warranty claim). They said no, they can't document the problem or open a problem without being seen by a tech. This seemed odd so I called Jeep CS and they were able to document my issue and gave me a service claim number but said they can't do anything other than document my subjective assessment and the date I contacted them.

Approximately 30 minutes later, I opened the door to get a video of the tachometer but as soon as I touched the handle and heard the electronic locks click (it has the electronic key proximity sensors), the tachometer dial jumped slightly and then dropped like a rock back to zero. At that point, since the problem wasn't currently presenting, I decided to go into town to run errands and see if it would act up again. After driving a few hundred yards, it started up again. So I took a couple of videos of the problem and then drove to the dealership. Interestingly, on the way to the dealership, the gauge just stuck at 2800 regardless of whether I was driving or idling and regardless of the gear I was in. At the dealership, I left the engine idling and shut off the auto engine-off feature to minimize the risk of it resetting itself. When I arrived at the dealership, they told me there was nothing that could be done because I didn't have an appointment. I explained that they had just told me to bring it in while it was acting up so they could look at it while the problem was happening. But, they said this was wrong because they are just too busy to take walk-ins. I expressed my frustration that since this is an intermittent problem with no clear trigger, it can probably only be diagnosed by a walk-in... They said that this is an issue for all customers with intermittent problems and that I would just need deal with it - in short they said I just needed to keep making appointments and hope that it acted up during one of these appointments. I asked if they could just document what they were seeing and they initially said no because they are just desk-help and aren't technicians. I was insistent that there is a problem with the vehicle and it is readily visible even to "desk-help" and insisted on getting the issue documented in their system. At that point, one of the desk-help people came out and video-taped the gauge reading 2800 at idle. I then pressed the gas to rev the engine to show that the tachometer was stuck at 2800. It was clear that the engine was revving up but the needle wasn't moving. Then, after a couple of seconds, the needle suddenly ticked up a few hundred RPM's and then dropped like a rock to zero and then jumped back to about 700 at idle and stayed there until I drove home. On the drive home, the needle seemed to be reading low - anywhere from 0 to 200 rpm's at idle (yes, the engine was running - "auto-off" feature was turned off) and the needle seemed kind of "jerky" while it was running. To be clear, the actual RPM's seemed fine - power was fine, engine ran smooth, shifting seemed normal and gas mileage seemed normal. So, this seems to be a problem with the analog tachometer dial...

Just wondering if there are others out there with this problem who haven't chimed in. The dealer told me they have never heard of this problem and even the CS rep who I spoke with at Jeep said they have not heard of this problem. However, since this instrument is part of the "dash cluster" which does have known problems and a well-known service bulletin, I'm wondering if there isn't more information out there that I haven't been able to find. I figure that anything I can find on this problem might be able to help me get the dealer technicians to pay attention. Otherwise, I'm concerned this will drag on and on with no resolution.

If the Lydia, the Jeep Social Care Specialist (from JeepCares) is still monitoring this thread, any help or insight will be greatly appreciated.

Mahalo.

I had a flash performed on my tachometer. It has not been a problem after that!

And that's why they are called parts-replacers and people despise dealerships. I've worked in IT for over 30 years and the simple issues are the ones that can be reproduced. Sporadic issues where a customer shows us a problem (video, screenshot, etc) is where someone with true technical and debugging skills can find and resolve. We'd be shown the door if we just shrugged our shoulders and told a customer we couldn't fix something if it wasn't obvious or only if it was throwing us a self-explanatory code telling us what to fix.

Found this thread after some searching. My rev counter failed in a similar way today. But after stopping the vehicle, locking it and leaving it for a few minutes, it sorted itself out. Just before it went wrong, I got a low battery message so I suspect the two are related. Hopefully it was a one off and not something needing yet another trip to the dealer :(

@Brad41

You said little in your post.... but if you are experiencing electronic issues in regard to your 2018 JLU, your first move should be to direct your attention to your dual battery system ..... and it's 2 batteries ...that are aging out and probably need to be replaced.

Have you batteries load tested by the dealer if your JLUR is still under warranty.

IF out of warranty, just consider replacing the 2 batteries yourself, now, as the batteries are due to be replaced..

Electronic quirks and such are a preamble to a no start situation ....
