My son-in-law has a JK Sahara and warned me that if I submerged my axles completely I should change my gear oil in case some water got in the breather tube.
Yet on the rear gate of my JLU Sahara it shows a clear picture of the Jeep in water up to it's bumper saying you can go up to 30" deep while doing 5mph. That is clearly over the top of the axle even before any water wake.
Is his statement true?

I have submerged my JKU axels afew times no issues. I think on th eold dana 44 there is vent. A tube can be attached to it and routed up to ahigher point. My guess is it will be same on a JL

I also heard if yr diff is super hot from running it hard the difference in temp from the water to your diff can cause a vacuume sucking in the water..

Thx for both ideas. Does the diff breather come stock? I mean this thing is designed to go in water.
I believe there are diff breathers stock, but they may not be as high as we would like.

Here is a video for the JK. I think I remember a video showing the JL tubes going higher. Still looking for it.
This video shows it very quickly at 4:55

It's pretty cheap insurance to just change the fluid if you submerge the axles. Rebuilds can get expensive if water gets in your diff and you don't catch it quick enough.
