Funny you posted this, ran it Saturday. It's much easier than it used to be. They removed some of the obstacles for fire fighting efforts. It's still beautiful out there though.

Added this to my list! Know of any good camping in the area? Since it's a 7hr+ drive for me I'd like to make a few days of it.

Run strawberry pass from 50 to 88, then deer valley from 88 to highway 4. Lots of great camping along deer valley and camp grounds at blue lakes on the 88 side or hermit valley on the 4 side if you're a camp ground person (I prefer dispersed). On the way back down highway 4 you could run slick rock trail too, but it's a bit more technical than the other 2 (not hardcore by any means).

Thanks Zandcwhite

Thanks for the condition update
I am staying at Loon Lake campground on the north side of hwy50 (start of Rubicon) and plan to do Strawberry Pass last day. Bit of a drive, but I can't do Rubicon until I do the upgrades to my stock JL, but Loon Lake looks so nice. Ice House is closer to 50.
A local to the area will probably have a few more camping recommendations...

There are a couple decent looking primitive spots (fire restrictions so camp stove only) along strawberry pass.

I was also planning to drive Strawberry Pass this week, camp one or two nights, then drive down to Blue Lakes. But I have thought to skip the Deer Valley part. Any comments on current Deer Valley conditions? Is it worth driving in part way from the north end for someone new to driving over rocks?

Did Strawberry Pass with my stock JL on Saturday and had a blast!!! I am a beginner overlander, so when I looked up at the first challenge (start of trail from north) I had my doubts. Put it in 4-low and went, man I love driving a Jeep!!! There were a few rock gardens which proved a little challenging for me; but got through and only touched bottom (cross brace) once. All efforts were rewarded with spectacular views across valley to Kirkwood.

We also drove from the North end on Saturday, and camped at the top of Strawberry Pass. I agree. Right at the entrance sign saying this is a 4 wheel drive road we backed up to get into low gear, too. My son did Strawberry and I drove Forestdale Road to Blue Lakes on Sunday. Both roads were eye openers for newcomers. Very few people on Strawberry and we didn’t see any one else on Forestdale.
