So, my tiny wife (claims to be 5', is really probably 4' 10-1/2") has trouble getting in and out of our JLU. I've added grab handles and the Jeep came with nerf bars, but the step up to the bars is a bit much still. The Jeep has stock suspension but 305s, so it's not really that high (if you're 6'2 like me). And yesterday my 82-year-old, mobility-challenged dad wanted to go for a ride but had similar difficulty. His recent knee replacement makes it a challenge

I'm looking for a recommendation for steps that are low enough to the ground that my... vertically challenged wife can get in and that will accommodate my dad occasionally. I'd prefer not to drop $2k on electric steps, but if those are the best option I could consider them.

Any recommendations or opinions?

My wife was miffed when I ordered Rockslide Engineering steps before the Jeep was even built. Now she says “best mod ever”. She is also vertically challenged. They may not be the answer for someone with mobility or balance issues…just thinking of my own parents.

Dan, I feel your pain. My 5’2” wife has a step we bought off of Amazon, so she can get to the rock rail on my and her Jeep. When she’s alone, she has a piece of hay rope tied to it so she can pull it in behind her.

Of course, I have to leave you with this parody song, all in good humor!🙂

I see a lot of people carry collapsible step stools that take up pretty much no space. That way it's not a permanent mod, and you only need to break it out when needed. But it's always handy. There are also the mopar steps that attach to the Rubicon sliders that can be removed pretty easily for wheeling trips.

I'm 62 and have loved ones/relatives in their 70's & 80's. With my stock JL (and Mopar running boards) I CANNOT transport almost any of them period. I certainly tried & it's a terrible idea. When the need arises, I switch vehicles with my wife. I don't recommend dropping almost any amount of money on a mod to make your JL elderly accessible. Generally speaking they do best with a very low to the ground vehicle that they can almost fall into rather than climb up to. If your wife is 4'11" surely she must have been a gymnastics type right :) We RV so I actually have a collapsable portable step (for RVing). Sure try one of them they are not expensive & certainly temporary if it bombs.

I have the AMP power steps on both my stock Gladiator and 3" lifted Wrangler. I'm 66 and getting in the Wrangler is just so much easier now. The stock running boards on the Gladiator were just a waste. The level of the step was almost the height of the floor. The power steps are expensive, but well worth it to me. I do some off roading with the Wrangler so now wish I had gone with the Rock Slide Engineering steps with the armor plates. The AMP steps have slid over a few rocks and held up well, but the passenger side groans a bit now when it is used.
I totally agree with DarthAWM's post above mine.

My 4’10” wife is 70 and able to climb in and out of the back seat of our lifted 2-door Rubicon, she credits her yoga classes with keeping her strong and flexible enough to do this. Rock rail steps and grab handles were added to assist.
If your wife can't do it, get her a gym membership.

I Googled ''jeep Wrangler side step/running boards'' and found some that had 6'' drop and my 4'9'' wife with physical disabilities has no problem getting in and out of our 25 sport s. I don't think we can plug companies but it is one of the top 3 aftermarket outfits. You should be able to find something for under $400. Ok we got ours from Extreme Terrain.

you can name companies it is done every day..an end user is not the same as the owner plugging their products.

Dan,
We have the Rock Sliders on our JLUR. The wife is short with a bad shoulder and these steps make her happy. Happy wife happy life. As you know they are not cheap, but they are solid. Great investment.

I didn't want to put steps on, but everyone got tired of trying to climb up with only the rock rails. These were simple, 10 bolts each and less than $300. The flat step is a little too far forward for my taste in the front, but they do the job well.

I looked at some high end stuff but they took forever to fulfill orders and were like $2K.

Rock Slide step sliders if you wheel.
If you don't, there are some nice side step options that have a lower step, and yes-a small folding step stool is absolutely an OK thing.
We've got step sliders on a lifted Jeep and there are still days that my knees are so bad that a step stool helps to even get on the step sliders.
