US stocks opened down about 2.5% on news China is imposing retaliatory tariffs. GM is moving production of trucks from Canada to Indiana. Nissan has canceled layoffs at its Tennessee plant.

And yet the economy has been strong and unemployment is about as low as it gets.

The economy is global and has been for a while. Undoing that is pointless, but keeping it is highly beneficial.

Businesses change and so should people. If your job goes away it’s time to retool and learn a new skill. This is also where education comes into play.

If a town dries up because industry leaves, bring in a new one, or leave it.
I think you are missing the bigger point. This is not lamenting or nostalgia but rather the fragility of our overwhelming foreign dependence in many critical areas. Yes it is a global economy but some aspects of it need to be brought back home and some markets need to be opened up in a more equitable manner. It is not and will not be an all or nothing affair.

Hahahaha. The guy starts badmouthing Canada and just like that, every red hat wearing rube jumps on and belittles Canada. They follow and believe everything word that comes out of his mouth and no amount of proof will change their minds. Their idea of research is finding a source that tells them exactly what they want to believe to be true and everything else is automatically dismissed as lies.
I've yet to talk to a single MAGA supporter who is willing to call him on ANYTHING. Every single thing he says and does is beyond reproach. You would think insulting wounded vets would be an easy one to criticize. Nope, I couldn't get a single one to acknowledge that he said something stupid. It's a cult by every definition.

Being on the north side of the border I can say we have some of the blame to take. You want to know a funny thing ? We have tariff and trade barrier between our own provinces and territory, yes this right, our economy is gear toward the USA as the default partner. First lesson of economic: do not put all your eggs in the same basket. I guess the weather was nice that day and we skipped that one.

Understood. However, we are at an all-or-nothing inflection point. The current strategy and execution is improper in so many ways.

The US economy has been the envy of the world for quite some time. Are we really worried about tariffs here and there? If yes, a much more strategic and focused approach rather than killing ants with a hammer is badly needed.

Things are not as fragile as you’ve been gaslit to believe.

Well, that is how things get done. Many have had opportunities to move the needle in the past but have failed to do so.

The other country has the choice if they want to keep their existing tariffs in place or not on our products.
Please point to the tariffs that uninhibited Heard Island has against us. It's populated by penguins, not people.

False. One of the best recent examples is providing incentives for US auto manufacturers to engineer, source, manufacture, and assemble EV's here in the US. We did that without totaling the global apple cart.

Please share with us a time when tariffs and punitive authoritarianism hasn't ultimately wrecked economic growth.

US stocks opened down about 2.5% on news China is imposing retaliatory tariffs. GM is moving production of trucks from Canada to Indiana. Nissan has canceled layoffs at its Tennessee plant.
Which means higher expense. Adding overtime shifts means higher cost vehicles. Idling factories in Mexico means higher costs. Using American labor to build cars means higher expense. These are companies watching out for their bottom line right now, and desperately hoping for cooler heads to prevail.
