John Elkann is a good bet to find a capable leader. He has done it before for Agnelli companies. Tavares was chosen right after the merger probably due to France's ownership of part of Peugeot and their ultimatum that he had to lead the combined company. (I don't know that for a fact, but that's how they've acted in industry in recent decades.) Now that he's been shown the door, the Agnelli family through Elkann will be able to leverage their larger ownership stake (twice France's) to make their own choice.
Who’s to say the Agnelli family won’t give in to the same kind of flawed reasoning disguised as “strategic thinking” that led to the selection of the CEO preferred by the French?

Just my opinion, but I don't think the French gov't really had the company's strategy outcomes in mind when they stood behind Tavares at first. I think they were thinking simply of having the CEO of the French company in that merger be the new CEO of the combined company. They can be very territorial that way. They acted the same way in Airbus disputes with the rest of Europe.

It's a common Internet intentional misspelling of the word "stock". Even Elon tweeted out STONKS! once and the markets exploded higher. It got popular around the GameStop squeeze a few years ago, and GME is still trading at around 200x earnings.
Sounds like something his brainwashed followers would think is cheeky.

Funny, my Jeep dealer called me today to wish me a Happy Birthday... He had no clue it was actually my Wife's Birthday... He was using that as an opportunity to try and sell me an overpriced vehicle... I politely declined.

CDJR dealerships must be hard up for sales, that's the first time this one has called me trying to get me to come look at a new Jeep...

I took my Jeep in for the 19A clutch recall and right when I got to my desk at work the dealership called me. It wasn't service, it was sales asking me if I wanted to trade in my Jeep for a 2024.

The same guy who dreamed up the Cybertruck? No thanks.
What was the thinking behind the idea of using just a ruler to design a vehicle? It's a schoolboy's copybook doodle come to life.

Our Honda dealer has done the same, on occasion. They stopped after I made a polite request for them to cool their heels.

Ha!

Now, try to have them call you back when your Jeep is in for service. You'll get total radio silence...

Of course they didn't. Why would the French government have a private company's strategic outcome in mind? All they care is that no Frenchmen --and Frenchwomen-- lose their job.

Well, today a grossly overpaid Frenchman* is now unemployed.

*Tavares is originally Portuguese, but he has lived in France for decades now

Even in France their French brands are known as complete unreliable garbage. They're failing in their own home market

Carlos Tavares is Portuguese (not French), he financially straightened out Peugeot and Citroen and then saved Opel (in 3 years) from the bankruptcy that General Motors initiated (like Saab sold to the Chinese). He was Carlos Ghosn's number 2 at Renault / Nissan.

While technically Portuguese, his mother was a French language instructor and his father worked for a French insurance company. He also moved to France at 17 for his education. He joined Renault at only 23.

He may be Portuguese, but he is effectively French in his business sense and education. I'd argue he was even raised partially French due to his parents' professions and the cultural exposure that entails. It's almost certain the French would consider him a fellow Frenchmen.

Speaking of bankruptcy, what's up with Nissan? I heard Honda might be considering buying them?

You are right, but he has important business in Portugal in Porto wine, He is indeed French in sensibility and Portuguese at heart.
He often spoke Portuguese, so as not to lose the language with Carlos Ghosn who had Brazilian nationality (among others, Lebanese and French)

Renault disengages from Nissan / Mitsubishi, the fault of the nationalist Japanese of Nissan (see the story with Carlos Ghosn)
Honda wants a Nissan partnership in small electric cars. But Nissan / Mitsubishi already has very advanced projects with Renault bases that do not want them to benefit Honda !
