Who’s to say the Agnelli family won’t give in to the same kind of flawed reasoning disguised as “strategic thinking” that led to the selection of the CEO preferred by the French?John Elkann is a good bet to find a capable leader. He has done it before for Agnelli companies. Tavares was chosen right after the merger probably due to France's ownership of part of Peugeot and their ultimatum that he had to lead the combined company. (I don't know that for a fact, but that's how they've acted in industry in recent decades.) Now that he's been shown the door, the Agnelli family through Elkann will be able to leverage their larger ownership stake (twice France's) to make their own choice.
