John Elkann is a good bet to find a capable leader. He has done it before for Agnelli companies. Tavares was chosen right after the merger probably due to France's ownership of part of Peugeot and their ultimatum that he had to lead the combined company. (I don't know that for a fact, but that's how they've acted in industry in recent decades.) Now that he's been shown the door, the Agnelli family through Elkann will be able to leverage their larger ownership stake (twice France's) to make their own choice.

Tesla stonk is up 43.28pct year to do date and the only $1 trillion market cap company ever.

I am not a fan of Tesla or Elon but can he ever sell things.
Market cap is an incomplete measure of corporation value. It ignores loans and bonds as sources of capital.

Tesla is in 13th place when ranked by size of balance sheet, 8th place by annual revenues, and 17th place by operating margin percentage.

It's in 1st place by market cap because investors are most optimistic about it.

Oh I think that Tesla's market cap/stonk value is a total scam. A car company trading at ~100x earnings into a slowing economy is absolutely irrational. There are going to be a lot of passive S&P 500 investors crying a year from now. Tavares should have marketed the Stellantis stonk better and maybe made flung a couple of crude insults towards the Securities and Exchange Commission. Maybe he should have worn some Occupy Saturn t-shirts in public, etc.

EDIT: Just look at the last month, the stonk is up 50 percent on an election result where the winner was advocating cheap oil with "Drill, baby, drill". Irrational, same thing with NVDA.

Anyone checked the value of their Jeeps lately? Not for the faint of heart. My 2007 Honda fit (back up car- every Jeep owner should have one) is worth more than my 2008 Wrangler, and the fit has more mileage. Before the pandemic, the jeep was worth more. Matter fact, the Jeep has only gone down in value and the Honda fit has only gone up. If anyone wants tips on diversifying liabilities, apparently I’m good at breaking even.
2008 Wrangler is not the best year to check the value. 2-5 years older in same condition would worth much more.

2007-2011 JKs are less desirable because of their engines. And the automatic transmission used in those years wasn't great either. In fact it was terrible. Older and you had the venerable 4.0 and newer had the much more powerful Pentastar and better transmission. The new for 2012 5 speed auto was a tank and it finally made automatic Wranglers competitive with their manual brethren.

You and others are learning that most of my questions are traps. I know you can't talk about X/Twitter being successful because it's cratered since Elonia took ownership. Notice you didn't mention it.
Did Musk buy Twitter to improve shareholder value, or (in his view) save free speech? He took it private, after all.

Several political pundits have recently remarked Elon became quite successful just this Fall in achieving with X a much loftier goal than the peasanty task of increasing its (indeterminate) corporate valuation.

In any case, I'm not inclined to think Wranglers would stay true to their core during (hypothetical) Musk ownership of the Jeep brand.

Less desirable now maybe, but I sold my 2008 JKU manual in 2018 for 40% of MSRP. What model across the auto industry sells for 40% after 10 years and 140k miles?

For sure, the worst Wrangler still holds its value better than most cars. Unless you have a 4xe then you are hosed.

The engine and terrible 4-speed was just icing on the cake. The JK was a mechanical disaster in so many other areas when it debuted because Chrysler was pinching pennies like crazy and circling the drain when it came out.

The dash scratching when you sneezed on it, the computer eating shit from being zapped by static electricity, the soft top header warping from the sun, fuel filler neck failing and spraying you with gas, trackbar mounts snapping because they had the strength of paper mache, early DANA 44's bending from potholes because they weren't manufactured properly, and EVAP canisters leaking like crazy were just a handful of new features that came with a JK Wrangler.

It's crazy that it took FIAT, another company with an absolutely abysmal track record of reliability, to actually improve the Wrangler.

I still argue the 3.8L wouldn't have gotten such a bad rap if it had been paired with a better automatic. Regearing with the manual actually made it a decent drivetrain, although it still paled in comparison to the I6.

Ford sold off Land/Range Rover and Jaguar to the Indians (Tata) after huge losses, General Motors sold off Saab to the Chinese and Opel sold off ... Carlos Tavares (PSA) after huge losses too. Everyone at home, without hard feelings !

It's a common Internet intentional misspelling of the word "stock". Even Elon tweeted out STONKS! once and the markets exploded higher. It got popular around the GameStop squeeze a few years ago, and GME is still trading at around 200x earnings.
