For what its worth, i just ran out of daylight while sound deadning and polyfilling the sound bar. So, i buttoned up the left side and compared it to the stock right side. ...
The right side sounds better.
The left has less low range and sounds a bit muddy now. It is very hard to tell but it is definitely not better and in no way worth the time investment.
This is why i got out of the business. It is very hard to improve on a well designed stock system without spending big money.
Agreed. A while back, I put polyfil and sound deadening Hushmat in the soundbar and just polyfil in the dash top speakers. There is a video about it on Utube. It slows down the air movement around the speaker and definitely helps improve the sound quality. Certainly an improvement, fairly cheap to do and worth it IMO.

You might want to read my post a little more carefully.

Is there a $500 upgrade to the standard car audio that is decent? I can’t spend $2k. I have the 7” infotainment , no sub. I’d like an affordable sound system. Based on this thread, it seems unlikely...

I guess it depends on the individual, sounds better to me with poly and sound deadening for a short term fix.

Still think all the speakers need upgrading for long term happiness. The 6.5” is probably the way to go. Going to keep watching this thread and do some more research before deciding on which road to take.

It seems like power output from the stock 7” is currently a limiting factor. Depending on how much more power the stock speakers can handle, you might be able to add a small amp and get $500 worth of sound.
Or you could add a nice 5 channel amp and turn the gains down. Then some day if you want to you could upgrade the front components add a sub and turn up the gains.

This sounds like exactly what I plan on doing in the spring. Add a 5ch amp to stock speakers, adjust gain if necessary, and throw a 10" sub in the rear off same amp. Fingers crossed it will perform as I hope. We all need to remember the wrangler is about the worst listening environment there is, especially in summer with top and doors off, not to mention the necessary placement of speakers in the lower dash as opposed to the doors. I'm after affordable clean impactful sound, trying to get super accurate detailed sound in the Jeep is an expensive endeavor...

I just completed my upgrade. I went with a Kenwood DMX7706S.
An Idatalink Maestro RR with the HRN-RR-CH3 harness and PAC BAA22 antenna adapter.
Alpine PDR-V75 amp
Morel Tempo Ultra 602 speakers In Metra JP-1014 pods.
JL 10TW1-4 sub in a box i built to their specs.

The install is very labor intensive. I probably have 20 hrs in it.
The sound is good not great. The grills in the dash are restrictive. They are small and not centered on the speakers. I do not recommend upgrading to 6 1/2’s unless you are willing to modify the dash.

Also the left and right pods are not the same in some way, so as i perform a frequency sweep the sound moves around.

The 5 channel alpine amp is also overkill. I knew it would be but i got a killer deal. I recommend a nice 3 channel with dsp like the Audiocontrol if your on a budget. Being able to pull frequency spikes down on individual channels is a really nice feature that i will have to add separately.

yes, it is a significant improvement over stock. But I did more than just replace the speakers.
Carstereochick recommended some Morel 4" speakers that were pretty pricey but she says sound great. Im curious how that install compares to mine with the 6.5's behind the stock grill.

To those who bought the 6.5 pods. Worth it? What speakers did you go with?
For me the upgrade was worth it. The sound quality is a significant improvement over stock and once I add an AmpPro and amp I will get the little bit of extra volume that Im after.

I am running Hybrid Audio Technologies Mirus V MV61-2/C components up front Mirus V MV41-2 four inch speakers in the soundbar.

Speakers are tough to recommend as listening is highly subjective and can vary greatly between people. For me, I found a local Morel dealer as I heard great things about the entire line. In the listening room I ended up favoring an Audison speaker over the higher end Morels and favored the Hybrid Audio over the mid and lower tier Morels. You may have an entirely different experience in that same room , all of them sounded good but all had differences and ultimately the Hybrid Audios were the most pleasing to me.
