JL Audio c2 3.5" on dash with VX DSP amp.
Is this what these DSP amps do to entry-level speakers? "Sound Stage" " timing"...etc.
I didn't know amps could manipulate sound like that :-0

23:30 on this video.
The VXi series amps essentially have a TWK-88 built in. Amazing amps!

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! I will look into getting the upgrades you suggested with the 4 channel app Vxi amp and let you know how it goes.

Thanks again!
Quick question - I’m planning on using Focal ES100k in the kick panel and Focal ES130k in the sound bar along with the required resistors, fix86, DRC205 and VX400 amp. Do the Focals in any way alter the suggested setup? Also, do you have any suggestions on where to hide the amp?

Thanks!

Does it really manipulate the sound inside our JEEPS compared to non-DSP amplifiers?
(sound timing, sound staging....etc)
This is an overwhelming YES. It provides an EQ, Cross-over, Time-alignment and more for each speaker, and it also provides the ability to set up and easily access "profiles" such that you can tune the sound-stage exclusive for the driver with the top on, and top off or any other creative options you can think of using those controls. It's extremely flexible.

Is it adjustable via that #205 control knob sold separately? Or do I have to plug my cell phone/lap top in all the time?

Besides JL Audio, what other DSP amplifiers Do you suggest?
I see a lot of brands have DSP in their amplifiers now...(over $500+)

It's crazy that only the 3.5" dash speakers were replaced and then using that JL Audio VX (DSP) series amplifiers, it will dramatically change the sounds (with subwoofer of course).

P.s.
My SubWoofer is a JL Audio 10" powered sub (amp built-in)...
Will the DSP Amplifiers know that?
Or will it only control the 3.5" dash speakers?

The DRC-205 is strongly recommended with the VXi amps, as it gives you fingertip control of your sound profiles and gain control. It's a programmable device, so you can tell it what you want the two knobs to do. I also added the Bluetooth module, but really don't find much value in it. If you have it, you don't need to connect your tablet via USB to change the profiles and other stuff. Oddly (at least as of the last time I tried it) the Bluetooth only works with phones/tablets and not a Laptop! It's just a bit more difficult to connect over Bluetooth when comparing the ease of use using the DRC-205.

The VXi is my first DSP based amp, so I'm afraid I'm not at all familiar with the others. I've seen several videos where CarAudioFabrication utilizes AudioControl D-series amps, and I consider them and @carstereochick highly reputable folks so check out both of their sites/forums.

I'm not sure I followed this: "It's crazy that only the 3.5" dash speakers were replaced and then using that JL Audio VX (DSP) series amplifiers, it will dramatically change the sounds (with subwoofer of course)." I wouldn't buy a VXi to use on the stock speakers. It would end badly, I'm afraid. If you go with a VXi series, you'll want quality components all around. If I missed your point, just let me know, and I'll try to respond as best as I can.

As for your last question, the DSP can control your sub, too. That is, as long as you're connecting the sub through the VXi directly, or through the VXi's RCA pass-through. You actually "draw" out how you want the inputs to feed your system via the TUN software. It's the most amazing part of the VXi option. That may be difficult to picture, so here's a snapshot of what I'm talking about. I've changed mine up a bit on a different system, but you'll get the gist of it. Hope this helps!

I think that was exactly his point. In the linked video, they install a VX700/5i amp. The only new speakers are the Stealthbox subwoofer, and they replaced the dash tweeters with JL Audio C2 3.5" coaxial speakers. They leave the lower dash stock 4" speakers in place, as well as the stock roll bar speakers. I'd think that, at a minimum, they'd need to also replace the front 4" speakers. I'd rather disconnect the OEM rear speakers entirely and run with a front stage only than leave the original rear speakers to be powered by the VXi amp.

Thanks Scott, that makes sense. And, I completely agree.

The video by LiteBrite on YouTube.
The JL Audio Factory place in Florida only changed out the 3.5" dash speakers (JL Audio C2 3.5") entry level speakers $159.00.
They used a 10" Subwoofer and a VXi (DSP) amplifier...
The way they explained the soumd staging, timing..etc...is pretty amazing using their entry level C2 3.5" Speakers.
That is it

New KICKER AMPS have DSP now.
"Key" series amplifiers. Fairly priced too.

I saw this 4channel version (50w x4)
It has a microphone to calibrate
"Sound Stage", "sound timing"...etc

Hey everyone, I'm new, but joined just to chime in and try and help a bit. My husband and I own and run a car audio shop and we both own Jeeps and do a ton of full system stereo upgrades in them. We've already done a couple systems in the JLU style and just picked up one for ourselves in December so I just wrote a real in depth blog post about the audio upgrade options. I'll try and condense it here with the tips we've learned so far and what's currently on the market for parts.

  • 4" Components - not a lot on the market, but Morel Hybrid 402 and Virtus 402 fit perfectly and sound fantastic, highly recommend.
  • Audison AP4 and AP1 tweeter also an option (but Morel better quality for the money)
  • We have done the 6.5" modification too - pretty tedious, but do-able (we only did it for the fronts since more options available for 4" coaxial)
  • Premium Alpine models can use easy PAC Audio pre-amp adapter to get a 5 volt front, rear and sub RCA pre-out from stock head unit for upgrading full system and bypassing OEM amp (AP4-CH41)
  • Non premium models can use Metra AX-DSP and AX-DSP-CH5 harness to easily add a 5 channel amp to stock system, includes app with 31 band EQ.
  • JL Audio has stealth box available for either passenger or driver side 10" TW1, same sub they offered for previous style.
  • They also have a handy under seat amp rack and fancy fuse holder (expensive, but nice)
  • We use the Alpine 5-channel PDXV9 for most of our Wrangler installs, we each have one in our car - tons output, compact and great sound (100 watts x 4 plus 500 x 1)
  • Alpine PSS23WRA total waste of money. I'm an Alpine dealer. The PWE-S8, Type R tweeters and KTP-445U amp retail on their own for $540. So you're paying $760 for easy plug and play connectors and brackets. Better off putting that money towards better equipment or paying a pro to do it if cutting/splicing, making tweeter bracket adapters too cumbersome.
  • Currently no dash kit, but iDatalink Maestro RR and CH3 harness compatible - doesn't retain camera yet (edit 5/12 - they are working on this and said it's an LVDS camera - Low Voltage Differential Signaling - no ETA, also confirmed Maestro as is will retain climate display and access to vehicle settings).
  • Very shallow depth in dash and vents in way, I think Pioneer's DMH-C2550NEX and DMH-C5500NEX will be good head unit options because the screen is separate from the guts of the radio specifically for cars like these and it's Maestro compatible (edit 5/12- spoke to iDatalink the other day and they confirmed at the moment these really are the only two head units that will fit that are iDatalink Maestro compatible)
I hope that helps someone out there. Cheers!
I have the Alpine upgrade in my JLUR Rubi. I was thinking of just replacing the dash speakers with JL audio C2 350x. Would i be able to get better sound from just this or do i need to replace all my speakers and upgrade the amp as well?

Just replace your 3.5" dash speakers and get a JL Audio VX (DSP) amplifier..(subwoofer in the back)

I'm telling y'all it's not necessary with the right equipment. I will post on Monday RTA results with pink noise in our green machine with the Morel Hybrids ;) we can compare it to the RTA curve I posted earlier from the Hellcat which had the 6.5" 3-ways and a 12" sub. Hubby says mid bass response is a product of having the right crossover point of your subwoofer, having it time aligned (or phase corrected) and also having the right high pass filter on the 4". He says phasing/time correction is one of the most important aspects which is why a DSP is so necessary. Without it, it can sound like the woofer is far away in the trunk somewhere disconnected. Once the two wavelengths are connected and aligned between the woofer and whatever size mid bass driver you have (4", 5.25" or 6.5") you will not be able to tell where the woofer is coming from.

Great post. Can you clarify. Morel Hybrids. If i swap out my rollbar speakers with the Morel (as I posted I upgraded with the Apline PSS-23wra specific for the Jeep JL, so front tweets and sub as well as amp power have been upgraded, will my system be able to power the Morels to have a solid sound from the roll bar?
  • 45W x 4 + 120W RMS System Power (300W)
  • PWE-S8 8” Powered Subwoofer
  • KTP-445U Universal Power Pack Amplifier
The sub added is DEF a solid bass that simply 'comes' from nowhere, yet everywhere in he jeep today...it sounds great, I'm fine with the knee speakers, but that roll bar sound needs help :)

Disagree - if he has the Alpine don't attach VXI after stock amp, get the Pac Audio AP4-CH41 PLUS VXI amp. AP4-CH41 gives clean 5 volt front, rear and sub RCA pre-amp OR for even cleaner signal, he can use Pac Audio Toslink adapter and go straight optical into the VXI amp, incredibly clean signal that way because it remains digital until it reaches the VXI amp :like:

I do not think those would sound much better than factory. If you had the bare bones stock system and added an amp to them I can see that sounding better than stock.

I honestly think the only reason JL Audio used those speakers in the LiteBright video is they don't offer any 4" component speakers (yet, I'm sure they'll develop something just for Jeep's eventually). Also they were probably only willing to donate so much money in equipment towards their project. Awesome video (although cringeworthy at times watching her try to explain things).
