So since I’ve been looking I’ve noticed that many of the spares on Jeeps are secures by 2 or 3 lug nuts. I’ve only noticed one with all the lugs. About 2/3 of them have a factory locking lug nut. I didn’t see any aftermarket locks. Does this work? I never thought about it until now, but how common is stealing Jeep spare wheels/tires?

Depends where you have to park, when I was working down "in the hood", I had to park in an unsecured lot. All lugs and aftermarket lock on each wheel, at $500+ a wheel not fun to loose five wheels. I park in a private garage now, aftermarket lock nuts off.

I'm in Los Angeles. Around here, it's scarily common. My colleague had a beadlock stolen off the back of his rig in the parking lot at Home Depot of all places. A few years later, he had two jerrycans stolen off the same rig from a different Home Depot!

I put on a set of Gorilla 96644BDX locking lugs (one for every single nut) as soon as I picked mine up. Might not be any better than non-locking lugs against a properly-equipped thief, but I suspect it'll foil most.

I've heard of thieves slashing tires out of spite when they're defeated by lugs. Luckily hasn't happened to me, but one did bash up the rear bumper and trunk on my S2000 with a crow bar when they evidently couldn't get into the trunk. People can be so shitty...

I just put on a mopar set on mine, one lock for each wheel including the spare, may not deter thieves these days as they have things to get locks off but my baby is garage kept and where I work is a secure lot

Yes, I realize that a determined professional thief will usually get what they want no matter what precautions you take. And nice or bad neighborhood has little bearing on whether or not things get stolen - good thieves target nicer neighborhoods because they have nicer things to steal. I’m just curious if getting the spare stolen is very common and considered to be a “Jeep thing” that people learn to endure or if it’s more uncommon.

Coming from cars and trucks the spare isn’t such a visible and vulnerable target.
