In my case, leaving just the vent fan will disable the ESS. Personally, I do not have any issues with the ESS for now until it starts to give me issues. For the pennies in fuel savings, it would cost the owners way more in battery replacement even if you do the repairs yourself. Since it is winter in Phoenix, we really do not use any heat or a/c in the vehicles thus giving a needed break to these poor things! (Same with my power bill which runs typically just under $600 in the cooling season)
I am in full agreement with others that the stop/start button on the dash should be latching and stay set at where you put it.
