I feel like almost any tool could be that way. I've used my shovel only a handful of times, but the times I did use it have made it invaluable. The kind of wheeling and the kind of terrain can significantly change the tools you'll need the most.i’ve always thought a shovel sounded like a good idea and carried a folder with me for decades.
in real life, i can count the number of times i’ve needed/used it on the fingers of 1 hand with multiple fingers to spare.
Dude I was in the army and had to use one of those little folding shovels (etool) for real and now you couldn't pay me to carry one of them around.I’ve been carrying this old Ames 82 around with me for many years….. came in handy a few times until I got to FL. It’s a little less than useless in the sugar sand….you take one scoop out, and two fall in….…. Just carry it now because social convention dictates that I should…..

Not to change the subject but my most trusted & used tool is my winch. At home and on the trail.

Its funny you mention that. I was not in the military, I also carry one those little, military, folding, shovels. Its barely good enough to dig a s**t hole let alone dig out a jeep, yet I still carry it and I don't think want to take it out of jeep at this point. I'm reasonably certain if I do that will come back to haunt me in some strange way.Dude I was in the army and had to use one of those little folding shovels (etool) for real and now you couldn't pay me to carry one of them around.
Trying to dig a foxhole with one of those stupid things was an exercise in frustration. Doing it in full MOPP gear was a miserable experience that I wish on no man
