I guess I will also call bovine scatology. A JK has a 6 speed transmission and a JL an 8 speed. How in the ever living fork could a JL have too high of RPMs with 5.13 gears and an 8 speed and 37" tires, but a JK does not?

I must be in the Twilight Zone...
He's completely full of shit. I don't believe that he's ever driven a re-geared JL. He's completely talking out of his ass. I have a broken ankle though, so I have nothing better to do than to sit here and let him keep digging.

At the end of the day, wether you decide to regear or not, thanks for the good laugh by bringing up the subject again.

Always makes me laugh when I read that so and so cant justify spending a few $$$G on a regear, and when you turn around and look at their Jeep, they have sometimes twice that amount in worthless shit that will most likely never get used.

Cheers ?

I am no expert. Listen to @word302 and @chevymitchell - they're solid dudes who know their stuff. I knew nothing about all this before I re-geared this past April and they were both very generous with help... Here's why I went 4.88's:
I'm also in a Sport S, but it's the 4-door (ducking 2-dr purists hurling tomatoes and cabbage at the Unlimited zealot)... so my front axle is the M186 and rear M220. I went with 315/70R17's after my 2" Mopar lift. I agonized over 4.56 and 4.88's - 5.13's were too much for me and what I do (still spend time on the highway @75mph) and went with the latter because of altitude (Colorado) and the kind of wheeling I do: high altitude wandering. Also some day I may decide to pull an Overlanding trailer, I doubt I'll ever go to 37's (but I've also learned never say never) and/but didn't want to do it twice. On top of all that after deciding, I saw that Jeep also offers 4.88's on their manual transmission (did I forget to mention it's a 6-sp MT?)...
I didn't do lockers a the time mostly because I couldn't decide which way to go - air lockers or e-lockers. So decided to save the money and wait a bit...
So that's it in a nutshell. Hope that's of some help.

Thanks for the information any bit helps. So basically it came down to the altitude and possibly towing a trailer some day? which both reasons make sense. I'm actually in that same boat.

So which Jeep did you break the ring gear in? Which axle? What happened to this mythical JL with 5.13s and 37s?

"We have 5.13 in our D30 with 37s and beat the crap out of it. So far so good."
This is a comment from a post on a thread related to axle housing strength and tire size under the topic "Unpopular Opinions". I am not sure if I am impressed or creeped out that you took the time to go look it up. The teeth on that ring gear in that Jeep (JK) did blow out. I can provide you a video/pics if you want.

"The teeth on a 5.13 are too small and break too easy. Ask me how I know...."
As I said before, the 5.13 are weaker than the 4.88 no matter what Jeep. If on the fence between 4.88 and 5.13 (in any Jeep) it is something to consider. Especially when running chromoly shafts.

"If you put 5.13 in a Sport front axle your ring gear teeth will be very small (and weak) compared to 5.13 teeth in a Rubicon front axle."
Yes, as I have explained in the comments and experience above.

What happened to my 2018 JLUR?
It was hit and totaled by an Uber driver that fell asleep at the wheel. I can provide video/pics of that as well if you would like.

As you know there are many factors that come in to play when matching the right gear ratio with performance; wheel/tire weight, tire PSI, tire tread type, tire width, Jeep weight, engine torque, transmission type, altitude, terrain, axle type, etc. etc. It sounds like you have found the combination that works well for your scenario but for the average JL I feel the tire size to ratio matches you have listed are numerically a little high.
Pretty much everyone I know who regeared with 37s regret not going a number up. Same with 35s, they regretted not going up to 4.88s. With the ZF-8 youve got plenty of room to go up and enjoy the performance benefits. Rubicon on D44 axles and 35s I'd say 4.88s.

FWIW, I was told the same thing by three different shops I sought quotes from. Everything pointed towards 4.88's, so I pushed the easy button and have no regrets. 4.88's transformed my Jeep from a laboring lug back to a stud again - He's happy, I'm happy.

I'm just saying, you've only been a member of this forum for a couple months and have posted vastly different opinions on the same subject. I don't question that you had a 2018 JL, I question that you had it re-geared like you stated in this thread.

What can I say, I'm bored and letting you dig a deeper hole amuses me.

Hiker trailers quality is amazing. Specially for the price you pay. If you can get one from Colorado before they close their manufacturing facility I would. Indiana makes nice trailers too, but the colorado facility is pure craftsmanship.
