Confession time. Back in 2001, I worked overnight at a downtown hotel. I would just park my car (2000 Firebird convertible) on the street right behind the hotel, and leave first thing in the AM before traffic got bad.
One day, I get in the car to leave, and an 18 wheeler pulls up right next to me and stops. It's a little alleyway of a one-way street, so I barely have room to open my door. I waited to see if he would move. When he didn't, I got out and went around the back of the truck to ask the driver when he was moving.
As soon as I got around the truck, he started to leave. All of a sudden, I hear this horrendous metal grinding sound. I think he's losing his load (big pipes lashed to a flatbed). Nope.
Turns out, I forgot to close my door. He's caught it with a rear tire and run right over it. It's laying on the street, flat, but still attached by the lower hinge and wiring harness.
I was now tired and mad at myself. Rather than wait for a tow truck or something, I just grabbed the tools from my trunk, removed the lower latch, cut the wiring harness, then threw the door in the back seat with the top down. It was literally sticking up like a sail.
I drove it straight to the dealership and pulled in. Everyone just stared, then started calling other employees to come look. Years later, I would still have people ask me if I was the guy with the Firebird door.
Epilogue - turns out I did way more damage cutting the wiring harness than the truck did to the door. The door was an easy replacement. But, they had to put in a whole new harness, which cost a lot in labor. Oh well, live and learn.
