Okay, I gotta admit that I am incredibly frustrated! Until about two weeks ago, I drove Toyota 4Runners for 25 years, one of which I sold after 318,000 miles requiring nothing but typical wear items...then I moved in the modern age buying a 2018 4Runner with ZERO issues...I was nervous about buying anything but another 4Runner, but LOVED the thought of getting a Jeep...until today.

Two weeks ago today I picked my Renegade 4Xe and have loved it since until last night. I got home and plugged in as I do every night except last night I get a "Service Charging System" message. My Jeep has only 611 miles on it! I called my local dealer and they tell me they do not have an available appointment until SEPTEMBER! They did say to call them back next Tuesday and they will try to squeeze me in.The service advisor took the last 8-digits of my VIN and verified that there was no open software update. I called another local dealer to see if they have any sooner availability and waiting for a call back.

I read a few posts that said their 4xe actually died and would not start with this error message. I work 30 miles from home and am often out on calls so I feel like I am driving a vehicle that will leave me stranded somewhere, even worse, on an LA freeway! Has anyone else experienced this and was able to resolve it somehow? I checked the fuses and a lot have to be fully set (which was annoying), but that was done a week, and 4 or 5 charges ago.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have a WallBox Level 2 Charger and the L1 charger that came with my Jeep...I tried both and received the same error on both.

Aside from that message when plugged in, do you see any other messages? Does it drive in hybrid mode with the engine starting and stopping, or does the engine stay on full time?

In my situation, I had the IDCM charging module replaced, as well as one of the pins in the connector harness. That resolved the charging issue, but took a month or so for diagnosis and parts. Full write up in the link below (issue #2):

Hi Earned_USMC - I‘ve had my 2021 Wrangler 4xE for over a year with no issues charging (also have a level 2 Wallbox “Pulsar Plus”) UNTIL July 7 when I got the same error on my dash you did. I tried the level 1 that came with Jeep which didn’t fix it. So took it in & after 2 days dealer “reset the module & did an update”. Not exactly sure what that meant but it worked.

Well for a week, then got the error again. So took it back & after 3 days they “reset module” again & said it was charging fine on their Mopar level 2 charger. They recommended I stop using the “Wallbox” & buy a Mopar charger.

That didn’t sound right since it was working fine for over a year … but realized the wallbox I have allows adjusting the charging amps from 6 up to 40 amps. This Jeep maxs out at 32 amps & I had mine set to 40 amps.

So the past 2 days I’ve adjusted my Wallbox down to 32amps & have had no issues … (so far!).

i think you still need dealer to “reset module” & then make sure your level 2 is not set to charge over 32amps. Good luck.

How the EVSE works is it indicates to the vehicle what the available maximum charge rate is. The onboard charger is the one that controls the charging rate. So if the wallbox is set to indicate it's max rate is 40A, the Jeep will be happy to take as much as it can, 32A. If on the other hand an EVSE is set to a lower rate, then the onboard charger will throttle itself to that lower rate.

Your house wiring and circuit breaker will determine what the max rate should be set to.

Does it have to go into a dealer for the reset or can it be done with a commercially available code reader?

That I do not know, I do not have a reader so my only option is the dealer which is frustrating of course to go there everytime this happens

I had a similar issue a few weeks back. Plugged in the level 2 and got the error. Level one was the same. I do have an ECRI tuner and plugged it in to see if there were codes and there were not. But I had wanted to disable the TPMS and while I was in there did so. This pushes a change to the computer and resets the systems twice. After this, the level one charger, which just happened to be plugged in, started to work. I swapped it for the level 2 and it continued to work.

So my best guess would be yes, an aftermarket tuner or code reset too should work, but YMMV.

It is incredibly frustrating!...especially because my dealer is 40 miles away.

I dropped it off and they said that there was a software update...reset it and on my way. Not sure I buy that since the vehicle had only 641 miles on it and9 days old (in my possession).
