Rubicon, Rock Rails + side steps?

I’ll wait until this rock slider is available for the JL. They are simple like the Mopar performance rock rail plus it has the LED that can be connected with the dome light wiring.

Hey, I know you.....and the only problem I see with that type of slider is if you have dogs who jump in and out of the Jeep. I've seen issues where the dog's foot slides between the outer tube and the slider. They are awesome otherwise.

Yeah, prob not the best for dog's feet. There's more "step" sliders out but not sure if you have to remove the factory rock rail or not.

Ace rock sliders

HI Flyguy, ordered the same Jeep! I had Ace sliders on my 2 dr.. do you think they really weigh 50lbs each side as Ace says they do? I like them but adding 100lbs is a lot of weight.

What rain gutter racks and bars are those (they are thule but which ones)? and what width bars? thanks

They’re pretty solid...I’d guess that’s pretty close to an accurate weight. Adding a slider that’ll protect the Jeep and not get torn up isn’t going to be real lightweight.

It’s the Aerobar with Thule gutter feet. Bout $100 more than the square bar but you don’t hear that annoying whistle at higher speeds.

Personally I've never been too fond of the the ACE sliders, simply because to provide a product at a lower price point they cheap out and use a thinner wall tubing to make their sliders. The problem for those who wheeled their Jeeps is if you put the weight of the Jeep on the slider it would bend and damage the body which is why you see everyone who runs Ace sliders run them with the stock Rubi rock rails. Not sure if they've changed anything much, that was the case with their sliders for the JK.

Depending what you plan to do with your Jeep, I'd say that should dictate what you get. Back with my first Rubicon in '09 I swapped out the plastic side steps the dealer put on it for a set of LoD sliders that had an integrated step. Then a few years later when I got my '12 Rubicon I changed out the factory Rubi rails with another set of LoD sliders. They're a solid rock slider with an integrated step, I'm trying to remember, I think they were made with .120 dom tubing. Chris is pretty creative so it'll be interesting to see what he comes up with for the JL.

The LoD sliders are nice also, but a good bit more expensive and not available yet. (The JKUs are $609 while the Ace sliders are $449 -10% with free shipping at quadratec.) The LoD's are the same weight as the ACE sliders (50# each) and while you quote the LoD as being 0.120, the Ace sliders are 0.134 wall thickness tubing. I don't think you can fairly say that ACE

cheap out and use a thinner wall tubing to make their sliders

. (Some of the LoD weight is of course in the decorative 'cover' and the steps.) To each his own. I personally hate the uncovered pinch seam. So glad we have options. Those sliders look great on your Jeep!

Do these LoD's bolt up using body bolts? You did say you used to use rock rails with them so I assume LoD uses body bolts ??


I myself prefer body bolt mount versus brackets off the pinch seam.

I was only sharing what I remember seeing a number of times about ACE sliders on jkowners.com. Maybe they learned from those issues and went with a thicker wall tubing though it's not clear if it's DOM, ERW, or whatever since they only make a mention of "mild steel tubing". All it takes is a Google search for Jeep JK ACE failure to get an idea of what I was talking about. My point wasn't so much to bash ACE so much as point out that for the average Joe pounding the mall parking lot or dirt roads, the ACE slider/Rubi rail combo will be fine. If you're planning on doing any serious wheeling you want something that is going to be strong enough to support the weight of the Jeep. That along with needing something that also functioned as a step where what played into my decision making process for both of my past Jeep.

The dimple stamped plates on the LoD sliders, while yes they do much for the aesthetics, they're also functional. Try easily stepping up or standing on a round tube when it's wet or muddy, that's what is nice about the platform up top while down below it the plates offer a smoother surface for the slider to slide over and not caught on tree branches or rocks.

Last thing I'll mention is I'm pretty sure ACE products are made in China which likely explains the price point and warranty.

The pic I posted is from my JK. LoD sliders are a rock slider with an integrated step that bolt directly to the frame. You have to drill some holes into the frame and run a tap or use nutserts for the install bolts.

I googled as you stated and found a lot of nice videos showing how well the Ace sliders hold up. I am sure you can find some videos showing them bent up, but here is one I found using your search: Some nice "mall pounding" there. You see the Ace rails supporting the full weight of the Jeep.
BTW, they are "drawn over mandrel" (dom) same as the LoD

Not sure why you are intent on dissing ACE when you clearly haven't checked them out. They make all their products in house. If you check out their website you can see a tour of their facility.
Again, I have nothing against you or LoD, just don't like to see spread of mis-information.

Can you attach side steps to a Rubicon, and leave the rock rails installed?

I hate the MOPAR side step offerings. Does anyone know who makes some that look decent and are durable?

I'm ordering some from Quadratec that install and bolt on under the rock rail so it can be left on. I wanted to leave my rock rail on also!
