Retired Engineer
I jumped ship from 30 years at Boeing/McDonnell Douglas as an engineer in southern California. I spent most of those years running down small and large problems on all those airplanes. My last 5 years, I just gave guidance to other engineers and airlines on how to maneuver through the regulatory systems and occasionally negotiated solutions with the FAA and other international regulators. It was a job I actually loved to do. Ultimately, most of us weigh the benefits of working vs retiring, and our financial capabilities. I chose to retire in early 2020 at 63, with a pension buy-out, and self manage my investments, and also to delay collecting Social Security until 70. My only regret was knuckling under when the company approached me a couple years later for consulting for a year. I hated every minute of it. Not the work so much as the time it was stealing me from retirement. I told them not to call me again after my contract ended. I love the freedom of retirement.

My wife, an engineering manager for Northrop-Grumman, retired in 2019, and turned down many offers to return as a consultant engineer.

For some people, their occupation defines them. I get it. Many engineers can't quit working and continue working until they can't. I considered it as well. It was an extremely rewarding career that I can recall things in national and international news that I was directly involved in solutions for. Ultimately, I wanted to be a jeep bum.
Glad to be here.

Copy that.

Looking back, I worked some really fascinating projects and had a gratifying career as a Design Engineer/Project Engineer.

RCA Astro Electronics/GE Astro Space designing satellite structure & propulsion systems (I worked alongside Bob Cenker on a few projects)

Machine Vision Inspection Systems for Pharmaceutical and Food packaging.

SmithKline Beecham/Quest Diagnostics doing laboratory automation design, robotics, tooling, pick-n-place (I hold several patents and a few of my projects have been written about in trade publications)

Various Pharmaceutical Startup companies doing R&D

Ocean Power Technologies wave buoy power generation

Integra LifeSciences artificial skin & nerve repair medical devices

American Banknote/JDSU/OpSec Security I designed security hologram machinery (think VISA Card dove) and national/international government agency ID cards. Also worked on U.S. paper currency security features.

PennTech Machinery/SP Industries Working independently, I designed an inline aseptic vial sorting, filling, stoppering, capping machine that was launched at Interphex 2010

Empire Abrasive Equipment designing large scale automated media blasting equipment and cabinets

Ingersoll Rand chemical injection systems, primarily Mercaptan into natural gas pipelines including shipboard transport

..AND last but not least, I put the m on M&Ms and the S on Skittles, I designed/upgraded the machinery you don't see behind the wall at the M&M image printing kiosk at various locations including Disney Springs, New York, Las Vegas, & Mall of America. I also did numerous tablet marking/laser drilling machines for big Pharma.

that sums up close to 50 years of my working career, there's more but I don't want to bore you with the details ;)

Dragged my brother in-law into retirement yesterday. I bought him a hangover for a retirement gift.

Need a little help from all you experienced retired guys. I've been retired for two days now, and my wife thinks I have 30 - 35 hours in each 24 hour day to devote to household chores. I'm not understanding her math. Do I need to go back to work?

Well, I'm joining all you old retired folks. Next Wed will be my last day. 39 years as a carpenter/Superintendent. No rest for the weary though; moving to Northern Arizona and building a house, with a good sized shop.
Enjoy, every retirement is well earned.

You suddenly have slight hearing loss and a back that acts up every once in awhile. 🙃
And you need to make frequent trips to either the chiropractor or Home Depot to get you out of the house for a bit.
I'm going to join a gym and play pickleball for real in the coming weeks...enjoy your retirement....
