Thought I'd start a thread for us old guys who are able to throw away our alarm clocks and no longer need a daily driver.
I spend most of my time now going to my grandsons baseball games usually at least twice a week, Unfortunately the games are forty minutes away. Most of my miles on my Jeep are from going to games or seeing them.
When baseball ends they will be playing soccer and basketball.
I drove for NYCTA for 32 years retired in 2018 and just this month started getting my social security at the age of 62. I could have held off but you never know when you'll drop dead so decided to get it while I can enjoy it.
On a side note I went to my old depot last week to update my employee pass which had expired, it really of no use to me except for the very rare occurrence of travelling into NYC to ride for free and just another ID to have on me.
So anyway I went into the depot and we have a section outside the union shop were employees that have died they post their mass card or just a picture. I remember when the tradition started there were like 5 cards, now there are 70+. 🫨
What was sad was I recognized more people on the wall than the new guys working going about their day.
Life goes on.....after you leave a job it just continues...leave as early as you can...

Without pensions and healthcare, most old guys don’t get to retire at such an excellent age. Congrats on that for sure. If my younger self had any idea about those things, I would have chosen a different career path. So glad you get to enjoy those grand kiddos, and sorry to see that wall growing so fast ☹. It did go by so damn fast.

Retired after almost 30 years in the military and a couple years dabbling in (and hating) corporate business development for the defense industry.

Wife was just involuntarily "retired," despite flawless performance after almost 30 years of combined military and Federal service. Hard for us to complain when the same thing just happened to her younger co-workers who have families and nowhere to go.

I was forced into retirement at just over 63, had hoped to work until I was 65 as I truly liked my job as a Pipeline Controller but the company I worked for closed our office so I was offered to relocate or take a severance.

My severance package and early savings covered me until I could reach 65 for SSI and with other investments and no mortage I should be fine.

My wife and I are fortunate to have the "3 legged stool" of retirement. Pension, 401k, SS. From what I've heard less than 10% of retirees have all 3. We walked away from our full-time jobs at 51. Worked 10-15 hours a week at a local market until 57, now fully retired. Planning on taking SS at 62 for the same reason mentioned by OP

I retired 20 years ago at 54 from a State Government Agency after 36 years of service. After retirement in 2006, I worked at a Chevrolet Dealer as their Quality Control Manger until the economy went to shit in 2008.

In 2009, a small nearby city wanted to tap my expertise/experience and asked me to work for them, which I did for 5 years, and I was able to work on my own schedule, as long that I don't work more than 960 hours a year. They gave me lots of perks and the pay wasn't too shabby for a part timer, and I have great retirement benefits from State. They could only work no more than part time because of the law regarding retired employees working after retirement. The law was changed in 2014 and I had to stop working. At that point I stayed permanently retired and moved to Arizona in 2019.

I am actively involved with various old people organizations and hang out at the pool with other old people and swap old people lies. Some complain about their ailments or brag and complain about their medications. I don't have any ailments or take any medications so I just listen and I am very grateful for that I don't have any old people ailments/conditions. The voices travels very well over water.

Also, I am actively involved in a couple of car clubs, several radio clubs (no Ham Shit), and several Jeep Clubs. Sometimes, I wished I worked full-time just so I can have time to do some of my personal shit because I am extremely busy.

Besides hitting the trails and getting my Jeep dirty, I still race cars, and drive my Golf Car as my daily driver around in Old People Country, Hell no I don't golf, the pace will kill me and put me in a grave sooner.

I took every city civil service test, police, fire, sanitation, transit.
It's just what you did as a boy living in one of NYC boroughs, I was even in the police academy for a week until medical when they flagged my blood pressure. Told me to get a note from my doctor to ok myself but that was enough for me to re-think whether i was police material.
Fire dept test was hard plus you really needed a hook or military points to get you anywhere near the top. Sanitation was the opposite so easy that everyone scored well making it a lottery.
So transit was my future and it did not have the resident requirement which allowed me to move to NJ while working.

Sorry to hear that happened but at least you landed on your feet and seem to be doing OK. I think it's interesting that the Federal Gov't tries to placate its employees by offering forcing "retirement packages" for RIFs, whereas private industry calls it a "severance package," which is what it really is.

I'm 73, retired 11 years ago. Getting by OK on pension and SS. I should mention that Medicare saved me when cancer messed me up 2 years ago. Without it, I'd be dead or homeless.

I retired when my wife was diagnosed with cancer. She was pronounced cancer free a month ago and is doing great! I wasn't quite ready to go but the chemo really carried a punch and she needed care. Aside from what insurance paid it wiped out our 401s and left us in debt. We both went back to work less than a year after she stopped IV chemo but was still in treatment. We don't miss retirement. Maybe because she was having a rough time during retirement. But we like working and are making more on or second run. We're just happy to have that behind us. 😃

I'm not retired but I do have a hip replacement surgery in the near future. Is that enough to include me in the old farts club?
