Those days are long gone. Bought my Willys last November. Sticker was $53k. I paid $43K. Tread lightly discount, factory rebate, Ford Conquest rebate, first responder rebate and private rebate offer from Jeep. Too good of a deal to pass up. Checked KBB just for fun. Trade in is $33k. So....$20k below original MSRP in 9 months. Too many Wranglers out there and too much money on the hood these days. But still....40% in 9 months is pretty steep.

I'm not sure this is a fair assessment of future long-term values. Most new vehicles, Wrangler included, take a huge value hit in the first 2 to 3 years. The Wrangler is probably the one Jeep model to hold it's long-term value. Wranglers that are 5+ years old are a lot of money here in Colorado.

I envy those folks during the pandemic panic who were trading in/selling their used Wranglers for more than they paid for them originally...

Respect your perception, just not the facts.

  • Jeep Wrangler-specific estimates:
    • A typical Jeep Wrangler may see a depreciation of roughly $23,643 in the first year, retaining about 68.48% of its value.
    • For a 2024 Wrangler SUV Sport S (3.6L 6cyl 6M), the estimated first-year depreciation is $11,424.
    • A 2024 Wrangler SUV Sahara (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A) might experience a depreciation of $12,335 in its first year.
    • A 2024 Wrangler SUV Rubicon (3.6L 6cyl 6M) has an estimated first-year depreciation of $13,786.
    • A 2024 Wrangler SUV Willys (3.6L 6cyl 6M) is estimated to depreciate by $12,405 in the first year.
    • The Jeep Wrangler 4xe (plug-in hybrid) may depreciate by $26,413 in the first year, retaining approximately 59% of its value.
Your math is unfair as well, you got a discount, but use sticker for the loss.

You need to look at longer term to follow true depreciation

.

Here's the annual depreciation for a 2020 Jeep Wrangler, according to Kelley Blue Book:
Year Vehicle Depreciation*Resale ValueTrade-In Value
2022$877$34,086$31,655
2023$6,229$27,857$25,314
2024$3,790$24,067$21,692

The reason the value sank is BECAUSE of those rebates. Consider your MSRP 43k, not 53. Now you've lost 23%, still steep but not terrible.

If you want to really go crazy take some top trim 4XE's MSRP and see the trade in a year later. Easily 50% decrease in value from MSRP.

Lots of rebates are the main reason for the fast drop in resale value. Every buyer knows you purchased with discounts.

They definitely don’t hold their value like they used to. But, a lot of that is due to fluff in MSRP, and current demand in the used market. 4xe’s suffer from hybrid/EV depreciation.

$600 for a paint color, $2000 for destination charges and ridiculous pricing for option packages add up in a hurry. Lots of those options don’t translate anywhere near 1:1 in resale.

We often buy at retail and sell at wholesale (trade-in). There’s always a significant difference between the two. Buying and selling via private party closes that gap.

The huge price increase on new has helped the value of older ones a lot. Sold a 2019 JLUR last month with 63,000 miles, Mopar lift, and 35’s for $38,990. Original MSRP was $58,000. I feel like that is a pretty good resale value, and I think it’s because the new ones are so stupid high. My 2019 listed for $56,085. The same build in ‘25 is almost $70,000. Makes my paid off 2019 look better and better in my garage.

I paid $42k for a used '21 JLUR with about 44k miles on it in 2023. It's at 73k miles now and kbb has it's trade-in value in the mid-high $20k range. Private party puts it into the low $30k range. Not terrible.

Simply buy used. Got my 21 willys jlu with 30,000 miles from the dealer lot for 21k out the door. Like someone else said. Used jeeps hold thier value. Look at the number of people on here trashing stellantis. You don't think the rest of the world knows that stuff too? There's a difference between a $53k headache and a $20k one.

I think it really depends on the vehicle. Yes, there is a difference between retail, and a low trade value, obviously, but that gap can be closed in a variety of ways.

For newer vehicles, and when you approach a hungry dealer that is able to provide incentives on a new vehicle, and taking in a good, clean trade that will drive traffic to their store and make for an easy sale, it's possible to close that gap to basically what a private party sale would net. You'll need to be in a state where you get a sales tax credit for your trade-in, however.

Buying/selling or trading most vehicles is just generally a money-losing proposition, so any "good deal" just means that gap was significantly narrowed or eliminated.

On an older vehicle which may not qualify for traditional financing, or heavily modified, trading is absolutely not the way to go, and I'd agree private party is the best route.
