Wonder if anyone might be able to tell me what I did wrong with my gear set up. I regeared my jeep over the weekend and thought I had it set right, but as I was doing the break in process I noticed some humming at around 50-60mph. Stuck it on some jack stands and ran it up to 40-50 and could definitely hear grinding gears. Anyways I took the cover off and ran another pattern and can't tell if I'm too deep or too shallow. I see a line on the top and bottom. Also not sure if I ruined the gears. I did about 135 miles on it before I opened it up. šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø

You didnā€™t ruin the gears. This is correctable.

What was the pinion etch coming out, going in, and the current backlash setting?

Oh thank god! That's good I can fix it. What is pinion etch? I had the backlash at .006 which I know is a little tight, but I figured it would loosen up a little as it wore. The pinion preload was right at 15 in lbs. I just can't make heads or tails of the pattern since it has a line on the top and bottom.

Donā€™t focus too much on the pattern at this moment. We need to understand what came out to what went in. The etch is the number etched into the shaft of the pinion. This will tell you in hundredths of a millimeter how far from null the pinion was machined to. The number you need is in the lower left hand corner. Itā€™s usually a 0, but could be + or - a value.

Did you change any pinion shims with the new pinion?

Which brand gears were installed?

Was the humming on acceleration or deceleration or both?

Ah okay. Looks like a circle with an x and a circle and then there's a 1 over 39 or maybe a .39? The marks were pretty light. Unless it's the stamped numbers. I included pictures of both

Sorry it's been a long weekend and I'm trying to remember but I'm pretty sure I added a few thousandths to what the factory shim was.

I used Yukon gears.

Ah I finally found the factory pinion shim after digging through the trash. It was .049. I'm thinking I added a .003 shim to it but I'm not 100%. It was last Saturday when I did it and I'm confusing myself with what I did to the front and rear.

I'll be able to take it apart this weekend and know for sure.

Oh I missed your question about humming. It was on acceleration. I couldn't hear it below 50mph on the road, though when I ran it on jack stands it was audible at any speed.

Thanks for the info.

Take the pinion shim thatā€™s in there out. Put .040 back in it. Then get the backlash to .003-.008ā€ again. Youā€™ll be good to go with that. Yukons are consistently -.010ā€ or so different. Give or take.

That pinion picture you sent is a 0 etch. The numbers are etched on there in a cross pattern. The lower left is what you want for pinion shim adjustment from null. Itā€™s really hard to see but if zoom in really close, I can see it.

I never would have thought to look for that number or knew what it meant. Thank you so much for all the help, I really appreciate it. I'll change it to .040 Friday and then post the pattern I get. Thank you!

So I set it to .040 and ran another pattern. Looks too deep still? I found I had put .030 in there before.

If youā€™re at 40 with that pattern, then itā€™s either good or could go another .005-.010ā€. The pattern being on the outside of the ring means itā€™s shallow, not deep. The drive side pattern looks good. Iā€™d roll with that. If another adjustment is needed, then get it back to the 0 etch amount of .049ā€. I think youā€™ll be good though.
