Well it happened to me. After reading about it here, I figured that taking it in to the dealer (since it has less that 10,000 miles) and see what they have to say. Sure enough my service writer told me that I should stop driving the Jeep now because "the rear axle could lock up at anytime", so they gave me a loaner and told me that they'd have to order a rear axle.

All this is without getting the"official" diagnosis- just what the service writer said (and what I read), but I'm assuming it's accurate. We shall see.

You need to check with another dealer they can order that sensor that is bad and install it without changing your axle out that’s old-school now. ?

Welcome to the club of Dana 44 failures. You would think they would have this under control by now.
I know you have had a few problems. Curious if you can confirm the sensor is now available or does it require a complete axle.

Makes me glad I don’t have lockers!

But good luck! Hope everything turns out ok! And, out of curiosity… what vehicle did you get for a loaner?

I was put into a Dodge Durango GT with about 25,000 miles so it's not too bad. Much more room than my 2-door, so I immediately headed to Costco to pick up a bunch of stuff.

And what's crazy is that I've never been off-road, and the Jeep is bone stock. In 15 days, as per the State of Florida (and assuming it's not fixed in that time period), I'll be contacting the manufacturer regarding the Motor Vehicle Defect Notification form and get the Lemon process started. If it's not completed in 30 days, time's up and I'll be moving on.

As for just the sensor, I was told that "they need to replace the whole axle". At first my rear locker light was blinking on and off (not the front), and now the rear axle light appears locked with the front axle light now blinking.

Once again, we shall see.

Hope it all works out for you. I can understand your frustration.

A bad sensor won't activate your locker...it's just a detection fault. They may be trying a new axle for a bigger reimbursement, the sensors are available separately for much less. I had this problem and was able to pot the sensors (epoxy), but that doesn't work for everyone.

Whatever the dealership says they're going to do is how it's going to go. As soon as the service writer advised me that I should stop driving it immediately, I followed that advice. After all, it's stock, under warranty, and they gave me a loaner so I'm not inconvenienced. It is kind of ridiculous that such a capable vehicle is so easily rendered undrivable (especially under the conditions I subject it to), but that's why the warranty is there.

I'd be a different story if I was outside the warranty period or the warranty was void for whatever reason, but there's no reason why I should have to do that.

Just saw you have a 23...I thought they had an improved sensor.

Happened to me a couple months ago. Dealer ordered new sensors. I just potted them myself instead because a rental car would have cost me more than that part was worth. Dealers around me in San Diego don’t give loaners.

The common sensor that fails is available. They sell them in a five pack. That is how confident Dana is in their product. It takes about 15 minutes to swap the sensor out.

This is how easy the fix is.

I don’t know that I’ve read the sensors are improved, just that they are available separately.

That is insane. Instead of just replacing that part, a whole new axle "needs" to be installed.

If that's the case, I'd say it's an absolute waste of resources, but considering that Stellantis had a $17 billion profit last year, I'm not going to concern myself about it. And on a sidenote, with that level of profit that an auto manufacturer is making, I'm glad the UAW held out and are getting their fair share.

The part is available now. I’d assume that the warranty liability was passed on to Dana as the axle vendor.
