So I was sitting behind a minivan that decided not move on green when I was rear ended by a late 90s F150. His truck is totaled but it looks like the spare wheel took the brunt of the damage(although its just scratched). Does the spare wheel sit at a downward angel usually? I assume not and mine is due to the accident. I plan on getting it inspected, but its going to be a while before I get into a shop, they are backed up here.

I assume my wheel is done, but I suppose i'll have that inspected as well, does anyone know if that is done at a body shop as well? Or is that going to be done elsewhere?

Don't discount the amount of damage your JL has...You will undoubtedly find the repairs will cost a thousand $, +.

DO, asap, get an insurance claim going and have the vehicle seen by an insurance adjuster.
Already started the claim:fist bump:

unfortunately the wheel will more than likely be out of pocket due to being aftermarket and not covered on my policy

You were rear ended. The insurance carrier of the guy that rear ended you will pay for your repairs..
Just have your receipts for your stuff on hand to show the insurance carrier. It does not matter that the wheel, etc. is not OEM/stock.

Bummer. I was rear ended recently. $2500.00 and rising as they haven't seen the inside damage. bent/crushed tailgate, ruined spare rim, and pushed top edge or roll pan /trunk rear inward. Tailgates are not easy to find nor are body shops that aren't swamped. Everybody's on their god damn phone and in a friggin hurry.

Glad to know that you weren't injured, Tony. The rest is just a matter of paperwork and waiting.

--------------

I read these recurring threads with a sense of trepidation, wondering if it will be my turn soon. The number of drivers who are staying right on my bumper when I'm slowing for a turn, despite signaling well in advance and reducing my speed appropriately, seems to be getting worse.

That's really saying something, too, because I've observed this poor roadcraft for a while now. How much more impatience do these rubes have on reserve before they just decide to make contact with my rear bumper? On that point, I almost got creamed last year by an inattentive tri-axle dump truck driver...while on my motorcycle. Only my years-long habit of checking my six saved my life (no exaggeration).

Stay frosty, my friends. Your lives may well depend on doing so.

I doubt your wheel is structurally damaged, although it may be cosmetically. It shouldn't be off kilter. You'll find the hinges and/or rear gate damaged, which may include the rear quarters or floor.

Typically the person at fault pays for the damages, through their insurance company.

Yep. Their insurance should provide you with a list of shops (usually including local dealers) and you pick where to take it.

The wheel is a quadratec morphic, it has some scratches. if its structurally sound I'll keep it.

I was under the impression that no fault meant that my insurance would pay for mine and his would pay for his. However, I've learned that is incorrect in Florida and his would pay for my damages.

Its going into the shop on thursday. We will see how it goes. I started down the google rabbit hole. looks like the damage can get pretty extensive even without a whole lot of visible damage. The guy was slamming on his brakes and slowing down. Hopefully the damage will be minimal.

Just got my out of the shop two weeks ago. Make sure you look at everything as extensively as you can before going in. Point out what you see. Don't rely on them. And it is the responsibility of the insurance company to make you whole. Even aftermarket parts. Especially DOT certified parts that replace OEM like a wheel and tire.

My recommendation is to ask for all of your parts back if you can. Maybe you end up with an extra wheel out of the ordeal. I ended up keeping my scratched MOPAR rear steel bumper.

When you get it back, check under and inside everything. I made the mistake of not checking the back up sensor bevel inserts. They had been man handled and jammed back into the incorrect positions. Lesson learned. If something seems off at all, do not be shy. Ensure you get every bit of this repair paid for.

It's not your fault.

No-Fault only applies to personal injury. Ignore that. Your damages are coming straight out of the other driver's Liability insurance. Rear ending someone stopped at a light is about as at-fault as it gets.

Don't be shy or hold back out of politeness. Find absolutely every bit of damage caused by the accident no matter how minor. OEM or Aftermarket doesn't matter. The other driver damaged your property and their insurance must make you whole. If you decide to ignore any bit of damage they'll be more than happy to let you do it.

Yes, and why I document my aftermarket purchases along with pictures. Proving 'loss' is necessary otherwise they will go with OEM stock numbers.

Just over a year since I was rear ended. My spare hung a little different after the accident as well. Haha. Glad you are ok.
