Asking mostly for my paranoia and OCD with my jeep. I’ve done the trans service, but it’s been whining for long before that. Not sure if I didn’t notice it because my tires before were louder, these mickeys are pretty quiet. But I’m also mostly curious if it’s a cause for concern with the trans pump going out eventually. I know some users like @CarbonSteel had a whine until he sold his jeep. Which since mine is doing it seems par for the course.

So I only hear the trans whine under spirited driving. Well as sported as you can get in a box in wheels held together by solid axles.

Either way let me preface that I only drive the jeep like this when I’m alone on roads. I know we’re not supposed to drive the jeeps like idiots but it’s fun sometimes.

scenario 1: Cruising 60-75MPH, kick down from 8th to 5th, it winds up the pump i’m assuming as it’s shifting down. Does not continue once in gear.

Scenario 2: (must preface, empty high way usually after work late at night the on ramp is fun)
WOT in 6th gear, starts at 90MPH and continues until I let off

Scenario 3: another fun moment, off ramp that is pretty aggressive with the corner, I call it the toilet bowl, 4th gear and trail brake a bit into it holding speed and on corner exit it whines. I’ve always assume this is due to the fluid sloshing around to one side of the pan.

In addition to the whine, when cold and shifting into reverse, there was at least a 2 second delay and then it would "clunk" into gear pretty violently. When considering that and the engine issues, I'm glad I kicked it to the curb.

Never noticed it until the drain plug in my front passenger floor mat popped out. Heard all kinds of noises from the transmission i never heard before. I pushed the plug back in and back to being content wth not knowing the sounds it makes under there!

I've had the clunk in reverse for 30K miles. It's really annoying. Even when warm I get a click sound when I shift into reverse. Never had a silent shift in reverse since I owned it.

The click was ok and expected. I have seen that on a number of them. The clunk is a different matter given the delay before it would go into gear. I am confident mine would have failed (probably about the same time the engine would have went) and left me stranded somewhere.

Never had a clunk like that, only if the jeep was resting on the parking pawl. I’m wondering if the whine, etc can be solved by swapping out the valve body though. However, what mine does that not many JLs I’ve driven do is a more firm and noticeable shift into R, D etc. Say in the morning, or just in general in a parking lot, it kinda lets you know when it’s in gear. I’ve driven many JLs at work and most of them are smooth into gear etc.

But i’ll be keeping an eye out for the whine, i’m assuming it’s been doing it for a long time now, it’s at 70k now, and my old kendas were louder than my mickeys now so it might’ve been doing it. However, I’m gonna start getting a tranny replacement fund saved up for the just in case it happens in the future.

Mine whines when in reverse, or at least it sounds like it’s coming From the transmission. Every time when my wife is with me when I back out of the barn she says “spooky ghost”.

Isn't this kind of stuff what the warranty is for? If my transmission was making funny noises and clunking and this and that I think I'd be getting a transmission under warranty.

If I still had a warranty sure lol, and then at that point it’s just getting the runaround and how the dealer couldn’t reproduce the problem.

My 4xe makes a high pitched sound when idling, which I noticed when I first picked it up. I asked the service rep, whom I trust, about it, and she said it was normal.

Is this what you guys are talking about?

The dealership that rebuilt my rear end sent two techs out in my Jeep to diagnose it and they did and then they fixed I don't know why everybody thinks that every dealer is always giving them the runaround but that's not the case.

Mine does whine while reversing. Otherwise awesome transmission. That being said, (the actual ZF-8) in my wife's X5 is silent. I also had an HP8 in a 2016 hemi Ram that was silent.

Due to the cut of the gears, a gear whine in reverse is 100% normal (many vehicles do this). However, it should not whine in any of the forward gears. The whine in mine would increase with speed. I opine that some of the ZF8 transmissions were underfilled from the factory (mine was) and thus a bearing (likely in the pump) was scored due to the low fluid.
