I am going to be picking up my 2024 Rubicon X soon 3.6L engine w/ automatic trans. I have seen conflicting information on the 300-mile break in period.

The dealer in 40 - 45 miles from the interstate, and if this was a Toyota or Honda, I'd drive down to the interstate, set the cruise at 72, and begin the 1700-mile drive home.

Now, this being a Jeep.... For those that have done this, how long was it before you took it to 70 - 72, How about using the cruise control. Would 50 miles of around town, and 100 miles under 65 work.

I'm trying to plot the best route home, and probably don't want to spend the first 4 hours in the interstate driving 50 mph.

Thanks

I wouldn't hold it at a steady speed for long periods of time. Accelerate and decelerate to seat the piston rings. On the freeway I'd go 70 for a little, 60 for a little, 55 for a little back to 70 and so on for the first couple of hundred miles. I wouldn't worry about speed so much as engine rpm's. Vary the rpm's on your trip and it'll be fine. Don't hold it at a steady speed or rpm for a long period.

Mine was 150 miles from home. Took the two lane through the city, then hit the slab for the last 75 miles. Varied the interstate speed between 60and 75. Never ever again drove any different than I usually do. Runs great. No issues. 25 k miles later she doesn’t use a drop between oil changes. Zero complaint. I’d drive the miles to the slab varying the speed a bit, the hit the slab. Just don’t set the cruise and run a steady speed for a few miles and you’ll be fine.

According to the manual (which you don't have, I realize):

"ENGINE BREAK-IN RECOMMENDATIONS A long break-in period is not required for the engine and drivetrain (transmission and axle) in your vehicle. Drive moderately during the first 300 miles (500 km). After the initial 60 miles (100 km), speeds up to 50 or 55 mph (80 or 90 km/h) are desirable. Brief full-throttle acceleration within the limits of local traffic laws contributes to a good break-in. Wide-open throttle acceleration in low gear can be detrimental and should be avoided."

I bought my Jeep in Tennessee and drove it home to Texas. What I did was took backroads somewhat parallel to the freeway for the first 60 miles, then stayed on the access road for the next ~250mi, and then got on the freeway properly after that.

Took longer, obviously, and was probably overkill, but I like to keep my vehicles for as long as possible - my last vehicle was an '06 GMC Sierra that I bought brand new, so a little inconvenience up front is worth the longevity in the back-end, IMO.

Keep in mind that your Jeep may already have 10-15 miles on it so there is that. Also, I would just vary the speed for the first 200-300 miles and go from there and you should be fine, don't over think this.

I'm about to do the same drive I believe. I'm picking up from Gupton this week, and driving back from Nashville to DFW. Any worthwhile backroads you hit during the first stint that you'd recommend? How long did the trip end up taking you?

I drove back roads from Gupton to the love's truck stop just past Dickinson off I40. It's a pleasant drive albeit slow. Drove I40 to lenoke AR, trying not to exceed 55 mph. After 250 - 300 miles went to 60 mph going to McKinney.

I picked mine up from Gupton and did the same, the first 140 miles was just wandering around Tennessee backroads on a lovely April afternoon/evening, learning how everything worked and enjoying the countryside.

Backroad it home, IMO, enjoy the ride and it'll get that varied speed without having to think about it. I kept mine below 65 for the first 300, but it was easy because I had no need for any high speed highway use.
Approaching 4k miles and it's doing great.
