I also keep mine in the center console. Mine is a manual so I don't really want to be messing with my phone anyway. I just use CarPlay.
It also keeps the cord in the console and out of sight. I am a little OCD about loose cords.
The only downside is sometimes I forget my phone because it is out of sight, but I am getting more in the habit of pulling it out.

I have a Pixel 2 and it never leaves my pocket unless it needs to be charged, and then it's in the cupholder. $300 to $600 fine and 5 points for manipulating your phone while driving here... If I do decide to mount it, I will get a RAM mount and attach it to the driver's side of the passenger grab-bar, out of danger for the airbag.

I have case on my 2XL bit its not super thick so i put it inbetween the cup holders since i use android auto. If im lazy i'll just put it in a cup holder. Yours might fit that way.

Correct. It says that you can cut the rubber pad to put 3/4 of it back. I haven’t done that yet.
